Jack, I miss this active forum! The van forum is quiet as there are not as many users. I look for posts that I can help out with. The coolant filter sure did what it was supposed to do for me. After 20k miles with the same coolant, it still looked fresh.
I already miss the 6.0 diesel. With all the steep grades that we climb, I either need to lighten the load or get a diesel. I don't see any chance of lightening the load even after the kids grew up. I carried 4 sockets sets, jack stands, various wrenches, medium hydraulic jack, barrel jack, come-along, and telescoping ladder, and many other tools. I changed out a tire on the road, installed the Active Suspension, replaced a failed air conditioner pulley (missing 50% of the bearings), replaced EGR pressure feedback sensor, and a few other minor repairs on the road.
I will either get another 6.0 that's been upgraded or the 7.3. The V10 has the torque that I need. But it's even harder to work on in such limited space. The 6.0 was a trooper for nearly 45k miles!
Sorry to hear the 5.4 isn't cutting it for you. A van is a bunch heavier than our Expy, but we tow a heavy trailer and yeah, we aren't passing folks, but we get there and it has plenty of cooling for those climbs. On the other hand it would be neat to have you back on the 6.0 board!

Scott, it's working out. I just have to remember that it's not a zippy as the 6.0. The repairs were minor. I bought the van and did not have the time to replace or check the items that failed. It does not run as hot as the diesel climbing hills. One advantage this van has over the diesel van is access to the engine compartment! I can flip in an alternator in 25 minutes. Serpentine belt in 15 minutes. Radiator in 15 minutes.
I have to remember that I will not be climbing 8,000 mountain passes at 75 MPH.
Coolant filter? Little to no value added, period, exclamation point. Total waste of money unless of course you want to drop good dollars chasing a terrible design that may (AT BEST) filter 5-10% of the flow.
Besides, you already have one -=-- it's called the oil cooler.
Better use of funds is to BACKFLUSH the system periodically, use high quality ELCs, distilled water --- I use Caterpillar ELC in all my diesels --- stuff is the best on the market, keeps the chemistry pristine and is designed to run incredibly long periods between change intervals.
