OK, dumb question. If I add a coolant filter and drain a couple gallons of coolant to do so, can I put that coolant right back in after the filter is on? Coolant only has about 1000 miles on it and was done by the previous owner at a shop before he sold it. Not exactly sure what's in it other than it says ELC Coolant Flush on the receipt.
As long as the coolant is approved for 6.0 use, no problem. If you have to top off the coolant you need to know exactly what it is. Many coolants are not compatible with each other. The 6.0 needs a silicate free coolant.
Sure. I drain it out the bottom and pour it back in the top after repairs all the time. Just keep it as clean as possible. On FX4 models a 5gal bucket fits nicely under there and if you have one with a lid and spout you're all set.
Is the coolant a reddish color? If so I wouldn't sweat it. If it's a yellow color it probably has an ELC with a small amount of silicates in it. If it's green some research and a possible flush is in order. A trip to the shop that worked on it or at least a phone call could save you the expense of an oil cooler replacement. These colors aren't definitive, there are silicate free green colored coolants for example but it is a good "rule of thumb".
