Whirring sound from engine

About a year ago my 96 Ford Explorer started making a whirring sound. As I sit in the driver's seat, I can hear the sound coming from in front of the passenger seat behind the dash. It's really noticable as I accelerate through my gears (Automatic - V8). The whirring seems to copy the acceleration of my car. When the car shifts to a differenct gear, you can hear the whirring change it's level of pitch as well. The whirring isn't smooth, but rather unsteady. Years ago as a kid, I had a transistor radio with an earpiece that I would listen to while traveling in my dad's VW Bug. As he would shift through the gears, I could here a kind of whirring sound in the earpiece of the transistor radio that would accelerate right along with my dad's Bug. I don't know if that story helps any, but that's what the current problem reminds me of. I'm wondering if it could be a vacuum leak of some sort, but do not know how to test for that (is that what a pressure test does?). Might there be air trapped somewhere it doesn't belong?

Any help would be great.
