Starter Help

I have a 1981 F150 351W automatic 4x4. I was having trouble with the starter- kept giving out before the truck could start all the way. Ended up tearing up my fuel pump real bad. Didn't have the money to replace the starter, so I replaced the fuel pump and babied it until my next check. Now I have a new fuel pump and starter in it, and it can start up, if you press the accelerator as it turns over. Sometimes, it turns over and will not start at all. It does make a prolonged, high pitched whirring noise as it starts- not dissimilar from the sound of a small propeller spinning. Sometimes this sound continues through startup into operation. Seems to be coming from the starter\flywheel area. Checked this morning, both starter bolts are tight, and electrical appears to be in order to the best of my knowledge. Any ideas, maybe things I haven't thought to check? Any help would be appreciated.

So what exact problem are you having? It turns over but it won't start?

Sometimes it starts up, sometimes it don't. Likes to turn over and not start. Sounds like fuel system to me, but with a new fuel pump, I'm not sure what else could need replacing. Also, if there are any theories on what might cause the sound it's making.

Does it always start when it's cold in the morning? And give problems only when warm? Or is it in the morning when it gives problems.

Seems like cold starts are the most troublesome. I've shown it to two mechanics I know and it warm starts perfect for them. One suggested (this afternoon) could be the choke needs replaced\adjusted.

That is a good suggestion. Do you know what the choke is and how to adjust it?

Are you pumping the throttle at least once, before trying a cold start?
