I have a 92 explorer 5sp manual, i've searched this forum, about other people who have the same problem with the push button 4x4, i did the computer self test and found out it was not that. I was just about to try the cleaning of the engagement motor points, but i was comming home with my lights on and noticed that the 4x4 buttons were not lit up like normal when you turn the lights on, could that maybe be a possible issue, is there a such thing as a blown fuse, or is that part of the light switch broken causing it not to engage, everything else that normally lights when the lights are turned on are, or maybe theres a problem some were else, am out of ideas can anyone help me out on this one? Hate to waste hundreds at a ford dealler, when if its something ez, i can do myself for free. Thanks to all!!
the 4x4 is not working period, in high or low, it worked fine last year just sometimes it was a little slow engaging, i would have to push the button more than once, so i was think maybe it was the motor, i just have not had time to take it off and clean it like one of the other members suggested, but last night i noticed that the buttons were not illumenating when i turned the lights on, i just checked the fuses all good, i even took the dash off, and looked at the amber lights that tell you when the 4x4 is on and off those are good too, i just could not find the light that illumenates it when you turn you lights on, i guess the next thing to try is take the motor off and clean it, unless you have any other suggestions, thanks again
Hey, golfboy. Go to e-bay look for this person ( rihdlowrider) they have CD's on ford explorer there tex. books on CD's it has all the testing you need to fix and repair the problems on the X. This is the same thing the dealer uses.
Thanks dogman, checked him out, he did not have the 92' repair cd, only 93, did not want to take the chance so bought it else were on ebay, thanks again
The tips on the transfer case motor repair fixed my 93 'sploder. Just remember to hit the red reset button on the 4x4 control box. It is on the drivers side rear, behind the plastic cover.
Dogman, i got the repair cd and it supplied really vauge info on the diangnose and fixing of 4X4 problems maybe am doing something wrong or not looking in the right place on the cd, can you help me out?
I do not know the setup of the CD. Look in the diagnostics part see if there is anything there. May need to go to symptoms chart and work from there. Need to play with the CD and go through the charts.
