I can definitely see how it'd break. A bad angled hit with the hammer wouldn't do it any good.
A couple of years ago, I bought a Milwaukee battery powered grease gun. It's busted through every clogged zerk so far. A few neighbors have asked me to come over and break through clogged zerks also. I love that thing. They're expensive! Before buying that, a very good friend gave me a Milwaukee 1/2" impact gun for Christmas. I never would have bought one because they're so damned expensive, but now that I've got it, I can't see me without one. When it dies I'll get another immediately. It's so much more powerful and convenient than my pneumatic impact gun. I now own a lot of Milwaukee tools that use that same M18 Fuel battery.
Sorry if this sounds like a Milwaukee Tools commercial but i had to put in my 2 cents. I love these tools. I have a lot of M18 volt tools from my 1/2 inch impact to a portable fan and Bluetooth speaker these things are great. No they're not cheap but I believe you get what you pay for and once you get a few batteries the individual pieces aren't so bad to buy.
I work at caterpillar and own the Milwaukee grease gun and the ipa grease buster both. The best thing I have used on a fitting that will not take grease however is the easiest and cheapest to try. Get a pipe nipple a couple inches long the size of your grease fitting. Put a coupler and a grease fitting on the end and effectively you just made a grease fitting extension. Use a grease gun and put pressure against the joint and then take a heat gun and heat the extension tube only. Turns your grease to liquid, makes it easier to get in the joint, and keeps heat away from the rubber on the joint. Works 95% of the time and completely reusable
