And if the shop threw it away, that is like throwing the lid to your air box away, or throwing the cap of your brake master cylinder away. The factory fuel filter cap is not a throw away component. It is part of the truck. If they threw part of your truck away, then they need to replace that part. An OEM fuel filter cap is around $25.00, so the expense isn't trivial. If they cannot give you back your original cap, then they should reimburse you for your expense to replace the cap. Ford sells them. So does RiffRaff.
The key is, how long ago is "a while back", and do you still have the receipt for the work? Without the receipt, getting them to replace the cap may be nothing more than an argument which ends up with you purchasing your own replacement.

I even had a spare Motorcraft filter with me when the truck went in that shop, but someone knocked it off the center console into some gear in the back seat, so they had their parts runner bring one. Only parts store in the little town only sold Wix, I recall since I got an air filter there.
Sadder thing is, I have always had good results with Wix products and a basic respect for the brand. I just preferred the Motorcraft approach with these. Where is that goofy big socket I need for the Wix, etc.
Already went through this once many years ago, couldn’t remember the details, didn’t want to ever fool with it again. 25 bucks @ Ford, ****! At least locally I get the mechanics discount on stuff, since I routinely buy all my ... Motorcraft filters there for 2 bucks extra. Is nice on the expensive parts. Sometimes the shop guys there seem a little sad they don’t work on 7-3s any more.
