The batter light on the dash came on a week ago and went out a few minutes later. Took the alternator to O-Rielly and it test OK. The light came back on today and stayed on long enough to put a code reader on and I got a NO codes found. Something is wrong but I don't want to swap parts with out knowing the problem. Has anyone had this problem? What was wrong? Thanks
Do not trust those retail store testers. Get yourself a new alternator (not a rebuild) and install it before you get stranded on the road.
However: check all connection points and grounds, make sure all are clean and tight. Then if all show as good, purchase your new alternator and watch the battery light go bye-bye.
I have gone through this at least 10 times since the mid-1990s and it is always, always the alternator. I have personally bench tested new rebuilt alternators while in college and the failure rate out of the box was greater than 25%. Buy new!
