Battery light on dash

When this light is on, what exactly does it indicate? Mine started turning on and off this afternoon. The voltage meter stays perfectly normal even when the light is on. I had the batteries and alternator tested and they are fine.

Alternator...

Mine tested fine as well ON the truck. For some reason it didnt test good off the truck. Got new alternator and no light since...

Mine came on when my Alternator toasted. Give you a bump for others who may help more.

x3 for the alternator, unhook the wiring and try testing it again (or just pull it off and take it in).

Word to the wise.....Change the alt asap they have been known to take out batteries when they go bad.

I traced all wires to and from my alternator, changed the connector, and it still came down to the alternator. I thought something had chaffed but nope...just bad alternator!

My battery light was going off and on and it was one of the 2 small wires coming off the top of the alternator was shorting out to the alternator housing..down about a inch from the connector..It had rub the insulation off slightly, enough to have a very small bare wire exposed.. These two wires are abit too short from the factory and lay close to the alum. housing.. I re-insulated it and it has been good for about 1 year now.
Another area to check is the main wire harness that goes over the top of the driver's side valve cover.. it will rub on the cover..

Thanks for all the replies. You guys were definitely right! The alternator died on me this afternoon. I managed to get it home and threw a new one in. Problem solved.

Not at all. I've yet to be steered wrong from the knowledge available here.

I planned on changing the alternator tonight anyway after reading these posts.

If we were that good then we would have been able to tell you that your alternator was going to die before you posted that your battery light came on.
