I had my truck taken apart to replace a couple of intake valves. The building it was in had the roof torn off this weekend in a storm. 4 injectors got rained on AMD are starting to develop rust. The FICM and GPCM got rained on also.
Any ideas on if they are still useable? I had just got the last of the parts in I needed to put it all back together. I just want to be done. Any help is much appreciated.
The injectors depend on how much rust. Get them covered in oil.
The FICM should be OKay if it was still sealed.
GPM I think is a potted item and you should only have to dry the pins.
Sorry to hear of the property issue. The injectors are the real issue, the rest are protected and if moisture got into the enclosures, should dry in a few days of low humidity environment. The exterior of the injectors can be cleaned easily once the o-rings are removed. The real issue with the injectors is if water got into the oil and fuel ports. And if those areas rust, putting those injectors in the motor on the chance risks killing a motor due to overfueling. That a pretty big risk and one I would not take.
The option would be to disassemble the injectors and see what’s going on. If there is rust inside, that’s a touchy situation due to the tight clearance of the oil and fuel intensifiers. Dirt that flowed with any water could be easily removed.
I have a thought.
Property insurance. I know homeowners covers some odd things.
Like the $1500 in tools I lost out of a truck I had broken into in the
driveway. Might be worth looking into. If they will cover things I would
not bother messing with any injector that got wet.
Like Sean said check with your property insurance if you have it. It would be part of the same claim to fix the building. All considered part of the storm damage.
When I was out doing non mechanic stuff I was sent by my boss to go work on a hot tube that
had been rat infested. I took one look and said call your insurance co and the Hazmat people.
I refuse to deal with rat mess. You never know what you can catch from them.
Anyway that was not my first rat/mouse issue and I found that the Homers Insurance plan usually
will cover the expense for things like that.
So good news, insurance is going to pay for everything I reported damaged!
Big question for yall, what brand injectors would you recommend? Does it matter?

Ford would be my first and New Alliant Power injectors as my next choice.
Is it ok to use steel wool when cleaning the block? There is some rust from the moisture that got on it. I figure a scouring pad was for sure ok but what about steel wool?
