So a year and a half ago, my E4OD went out again and it went down to just 1st, 2nd and Reverse with no forward movement if I put in Drive so unless I’m missing something, I imagine I need to either rebuild what I have or buy a new tranny.
Anyhow,I’m finally getting the motivation to start messing with the truck outside of just starting it and letting run every week. So what’s recommended for a rebuilt E4OD, rebuild kit, or a good transmission specialist near Chesapeake, VA that won’t break the bank. It has a 302, 33’s, and 4.56s, just in case it matters.
I’ve seen Monster Transmission but I actually can’t find more than one or two reviews for them and I’m not too familiar with transmission shops around me. But any help would be greatly appreciated.
I've never been one to trust myself diving into a Trans. However after watching this series I'd have no issues with being confident enough to give the a go.
Its further away from us but I saw a "rebuilt" one on facebook market place out near winstom salem. Also VA Beach Pick-n-pull had 2 brick nose broncos on saturday. I think 90 or 91 may have E4ODs but I am not sure. Keep in mind that the solenoids neurtral safety switches will need to be changed if yours is 94 or later. What codes are you getting? I know you're looking ofr a specialist in our area and I cannot help you there. I do have a 96 4x4 E4OD laying around now that I was planing to do something with, but not sell. Maybe try swapping out the solenoid pack if your're getting codes for the solenoids.
I wish I could trust a used transmission, but after the original grenaded and the remanned tranny blew up, I feel like I need to be a lot more particular about what goes in.
Judging from noises and bang I felt, I’m going with physical. And the mechanics I know that I’ve talked to, granted without opening it up, all said it sounds mechanical.
What codes are you getting? Also it would help if folks knew what year model you have. Of course that is outside the scope of your original post for whom to take it to or where to purchase from.
Mine was just shifting hard from first to second. It shifted so hard the entire dash creaked each time. Was all electrical and checking for codes may have saved myself a lot of time in the long run, but I did finally fix a leak. The part about losing forward movement makes me wonder about your cooler lines. I have had 3 trucks quite going into drive and start acting up. On the two that I solved, it was leaking transmission cooler lines causing the transmission to loose fluid and then line pressure as the pin holes in the lines opened up. "my E4OD went out again and it went down to just 1st, 2nd and Reverse with no forward movement" makes me think it could be the valve solenoid pack or "better" the a short/open circuit in the wiring harness if your first transmission failed in a similar manner. Did they retain your existing solenoid pack for your replacement transmission or did you get a new one? I think (from what I had tried to learn) that a later solenoid back will get damaged if installed in an older truck because the older solenoid pack had internal resistors to regulate voltage from the PCM. Later PCMs regulated the voltage to the transmission solenoid so they do not have the internal resistors.
I am not local to this area and didn't get any transmision shops recommended to me at work. So few people care to fix what they already own anymore. I did end up talking to a guy on facebook from the market place who stated he was the owner of Tidewater Transmissions. I did not work with him but he did let me bounce a couple ideas off of him without just insisting I bring my truck to him. Other shops and rebuilders just quoted rebuilds or new transmissions. That fellow did seem interested in trouble shooting my problem first so it might not hurt to consult Tidewater Transmissions.
Hey Deadsquiggles, I had the same issues in a '94 Bronco, towed it home, Got on here and saw the suggestion that the connectors may be corroded. I pulled the connectors and there was some corrosion. Cleaned them with CRC, added some dielectric grease and plugged them back in and it was worse. I mean non-operational worse.
Thought I did something wrong and crawled back under and unplugged them looked them over and realized they will fit the socket two ways. I had plugged them in backwards. Flipped them and had my tranny back. Also, not exactly sure about this, working from memory but if I remember correctly (and that is a very gray area) the plugs are identical and can be swapped. Worth checking. Might save you a bunch of bucks.
That was a good 10 years ago. Old man, old memories.

I had a Ford dealer install a 1997 Ford remanufactured tranny in my 1993 F250. Cost for the Ford tranny was just over $3k. This was in 2014. Also had them put in a tranny cooler from a super duty. Mark K. can tell what to use for a cooler, if you want a cooler.
The Ford tranny has a three year unlimited mileage warranty.
FYI the 97 tranny is stronger than the 93 tranny. The 97 uses steel planetary gears, while the 93 used aluminum.
