Leaving to get a load of stone with my dump trailer a few days ago and noticed the bird on a few day old road kill. Had to do a double take as it was not the expected turkey vulture that are common. It was a good sized bald eagle. I rolled down the passenger window and took a few pictures with my phone. The eagle did not seem too worried about me. Attached is the better of the pictures.
once a rare sight, they are now getting to be a common sight.
we have over 50 breeding pair within 10 miles of my house, and i see them regularly.
20 years ago you had to really search to see one, and it was not uncommon to have to wait close to a year between sightings.
Did see one on the side of the road having lunch. He wrapped his wing around it -- not interested in sharing I love them, and we see a few around here -- I just hope that they don't get TOO common.
Years ago, you'd almost never see a Canada goose -- now they're everywhere. And they make a big mess in some places.
Bald eagles are impressive if you're not used to them, for my money though the Golden eagle is pretty awesome, they get a lot bigger.
We get both here in CA. I've now seen a Bald Eagle fly right through my yard. I thought I'd never, ever see that. I think I saw my first one about 3 years ago and I'm 47.
I did have a dead Red Tailed Hawk in my yard. I was wondering how it died. I asked an old timer and he said, "oh the Golden Eagles come right down out of the sky and kill them."
The thing that impresses me the most about the Golden Eagles is how fast they fly and cover ground. Turkey Vultures just soar and it takes them much longer to get anywhere.
Bald Eagles are a common site here in North Florida.
A couple of years back I saw one sharing a good sized road kill that was 10-12' off the edge of the road. He was sharing it with 4 buzzard. That's the only time in my life that I've seen an Eagle sharing with anything.
About a year ago I was walking across the parking lot to get into work and saw a pair of golden eagles. It was such a shock that I nudged the stranger next to me to show him. I never knew there were any in this part of the country!
