Yep it's on top. I think there's a 5/16 bolt holding it on, but dun quote me on that.
Pop the old one out, pop the new one in.
I think it's normal for it to bounce a bit, mine does it 'til about 20-25 mph, I think it's just an old school gearing sensor like mine is. No hard shifts for me though (manual is the only way to go baby).

Harold I just had mine out over the weekend on a 1996....good idea to blow of the area around it real well as it is a dirt trap in that area...the release clip for the connector was easily found by looking up on top. On my ranger the bolt was metric 12 or 13 mm I think. I had to replace the o ring on mine after getting it out because of the remaing grit and twisting it back and forth to get it to come free...the retaining clip was attached to the sensor and came off with it. I cleaned mine with contact cleaner oiled the o ring with engine oil and reinstalled...didnt correct my ABS LIGHT but hopefully it will repair your problem. If you have a digital ohm meter you can check the sensor prior to removal...I can look that info up for you if you need it...good luck
