Okay - so... the only ECU the local savage yard has is from a '92 f150 with the 4.9, 4x4 auto trans (not manual, like mine). Will that work without any major problems? I ask because they want $20 for it - the cheapest ECU I can get online is about $200.

No. I tried a PCM from an auto trans vehicle in my 5-speed and it acted flaky - random high-idle mostly. I have some tested spares I'd sell you for $60 shipped. Just send me a PM if interested.

That would be awesome. I haven't been a member long enough to send PMs (i.e. more than ten days). I need a ECU with "ASB" at the end.

i think your problem is the stopper came out and all the preinstalled smoke came out. it is a dealer item but it is not to expensive. the install is free at the dealer. the smoke is a lifetime warranty.

I sent you a PM, but in case you didn't get it I have in front of me a PCM with catch-code T2D1. Part# F2TF-12A650-ASB That would seem to be an exact match for yours. I tested it in my truck about a week ago.

Got the new (used) PCM from Brad and put it in this morning - fired right up!! Plus, a high idle issue I've had for forever seems to have disappeared (had been idling around 1000 rpms, now it's down about 700 where it should be). Can't thank Brad and the rest of the folks on the forum who responded enough.

Before letting the tread go though, any thoughts on what might have caused the old PCM to fry beyond having served in a truck for some 300k miles?

And, in case anyone has a similar problems, here's a pic of what my fried PCM looked like opened up...

Glad it worked out. I haven't seen one burn up like yours - I'd say that one is done for sure!

Check for bad grounds. That is the usual cause of that type of damage. Also a short in a wire harness could do the same.

And sometimes they just burn up like I had a few years back..... I had a V8 ECU(I have a I6 engine) which I swapped out just to get home ran like crap trying to figure out the 2 missing cylinders but it worked!

Through the years I have found out the EFI wiring is pretty much the same for all engines but with added circuits for various options like E4OD to non E4OD. I did run my 95 E350 with 460 engine with a 87 351 ECU. Had no E4OD control but it did run good enough to verify the ECU was not the issue of my problem.

The ones I have seen burn like that is when the grease in the PCM plug dries up and then someone washes the engine bay or somehow water gets into the PCM plug with the dry grease.
Then smoke is let out of the PCM.
