up in smoke

Howdy,

Heres whats happening. I drove my truck to school, parking it on the 5th level of the parking garage. Went out to head to my next class and started it up, it ran for 5-6 seconds then died. Then a decent amount of smoke came up from behind the dash, right around the vin plate on the left of the dash. I know it was electrical smoke. It didn't smell like a circuit board but maybe just wire insulation. I unplugged the batt. and headed to the next class.

Went back today and the truck turn on fine, the guages work, lights work and it turns over great but wont start. It acts like no fuel or spark. Pulled the gauge cluster and part of the dash but have yet to find what burned. im still working my way into the dash to find the problem but im looking for any help. I have tools, but they are limited.

next chance i get im gonna try to pull codes to see if it will give me any insight as to what happened.

Any idea what might have gone up in smoke, literally, and caused a no start? I really need to get this fixed. Any suggestions or input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

That title is soooo misleading... I expected a Cheech'n'Chong video!

Start checking the wiring around the steering column. It's not uncommon for wires around the column to rub through and ground out. By your description I'd be willing to bet that's the problem.

However, the area you describe the smoke coming from is also the same area where your EEC is located, so be absolutely sure to check ALL the wiring around the area to make sure no wires leading to it have rubbed thru or burnt out. If you find any, it's possible the computer could be fried by a bad short.

Haha, ya, i figured the title would at least get peoples attention.

I'v checked all the wiring around steering column and im still trying to get the dash out of the way before i get get any further. Its the EEC really back in there??? I have yet to see it, there alot of wires to go through first.

Anyways, i will continue to investigate.
Any ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I don't know for sure how high up the EEC is mounted, but I know that's the general area where it should be located.

I hooked up a code reader i had bought a while back and used many times. Turned the key on and the reader connects to the computer, but it doesnt go into test mode. the truck doesnt do anything. The check engine light isnt on when the key is on and the engine is off. And it doesnt send codes out to the reader.

I found the computer behindthe e brake pedal and i highly suspect it as to the cause of my problems. I havent been able to figure how to get it out yet. Im gonna do some research and see what i can find.

My dad is gonna bring a trailer down this afternoon and were gonna pull it home where i can really start working on it and diagnos it. But in the mean time,

Any other ideas or suggestions? Any tips or idas on how to remove the EEC-IV???
Thanks for any help, it truely is greatly appriciated.

I had a similar problem with my code reader a while back. It turned out that the STI wire was corroded about 2" back from the connector. Once I cut out the corrosion and put a new connector on it, my code reader worked just fine. You could check into that before ripping out the computer- you may have the same problem.

check around the fuse box for wires that cooked out, also to remove the computer there is a small bolt going through a plastic hold down on the inside of the truck, and you have to unbolt the harness under the hood

Thanks for the ideas, im about to start working on it regardless of the torrential rain. I gotta have it running befor tomorrow afternoon.

Iv gone over every visible inch of wiring under the dash and havent seen any sign of burn or short. But i will double check. I also and gonna check the test plug to insure there is no corrosion. Then ill pull the computer to see if that might be the cause.

Thanks wickedklown for the instructions on getting it out. I havent been able to find any other instructions.

Any other ideas or tips are still greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Follow the wires from the PCM & Fuel pump relays for fusible links. I seem to remember the ECU being slid out through the firewall. http://www.off-roadweb.com/tech/0907.../photo_03.html

Thanks for all the help, i pulled the EEC-IV and found a nice burnt spot in the middle of the board. ill post a picture later. We decided to search the junkyards ford the computer but someone had pulled all of them, regardless of engine or model. They were all gone. Expect one, and it was fried as well.

i can get one through any of the chain auto suppliers, but not till Monday morning at the earliest. Unfortunately thats to late. I have to leave tomorrow afternoon.

Thanks for all the help, and please post any suggestion on a place to get a good replacement unit. unless i can get it tomorrow, ill have all week to ship it.
