Replacing full size starter with headers installed?
So, I'm going to go ahead and replace my starter on my 360FE with headers installed. The current starter is a full sized starter and it sits in there fine for clearance with the headers. But, it doesn't look like I can get it out without unbolting the passenger side header.
Is that a pretty standard way to replace the starter when headers are installed? If I unbolt the header will I need a new exhaust gasket or can I pretty much reuse the current one if it's intact? Does anyone know the torque specs on the header bolts?
Also, does anyone have a good recommendation for a heat shield blanket?
Yes you probably are going to have to remove the header to get the starter out. On my truck I used SCE # 4134 copper gaskets about 17 years ago and they have worked great for me. I've had to remove them a couple of times over the years and have reused the same gaskets with no leaks. Torque spec. is around 35 LB. FT., but I just tighten them up good by hand , check tightness after 100 miles or so and forget about them. Have never had one come loose doing it like that, beside the fact that you cant get a torque wrench on about 1/2 of the bolts. Summit, JEGS, and some of the better parts stores sell the starter heat shields. I've used the DEI shield and have no issues with the functionality.
