doors / side mirror mount
The drivers side door he had on the truck when I bought it was one of the spare doors.
His reason for swapping the doors was "there was a rattling I didn't care for" on the original drivers side door.
He couldn't tell me off of what vehicle the spare doors came from.
Here is a picture the holes for the side mirror of the original drivers side door.
Back home, the DMV person made me hang the original door on the vehicle before they would authorize the VIN check.
When I did that, I tried attaching the side mirror to the door, and I found it could not marry up with the door due to the metal grommets, and I heard a constant rattle from the side mirror mount.
Should there be metal grommets in the door?
I had read in other threads that when the trucks were delivered to the dealership, they had no side mirrors mounted, and it was the dealership that had to cut the holes and mount the style of mirror that the customer or dealership wanted the vehicle to have. Would the grommets have been original?
These metal grommets are not in the door tight, so even if you tighten the bolt/nut that holds the mirror, the grommet still rubs against the door metal it spans.
Is there a way to cut the grommets out without damaging the door?
Bottom two holes, and upper right hole have metal grommets. Top left hole has no grommet.
On the spare passenger door, there are no holes drilled for a side mirror.
The place for the emblem does have holes with grommets.
Again, I don't know off of what vehicle the previous owner got these doors.
What Ford vehicle that uses the same doors as the pickups did not have passenger side mirrors?
No holes drilled for a side mirror. Holes with grommets for the emblem, shown.

Drill them out and replace them with new nut inserts. You can buy them at any hardware store. Make sure you get the nut that goes with it. So you can install them. I have a tool that works great for those.
The only standard equipment mirror (except Camper Specials) was the left hand Passenger Car type (TYPE 5 in pic), but no outside mirrors were installed by FoMoCo.
The dealers installed all the outside mirrors. The Passenger Car type was placed inside the cab at final assembly, but most people did not want it. Most were THROWN AWAY, I kid you not!
TYPE 3 or 8 came with the Camper Special package. But people could have the dealers install other mirrors. The TYPE 3's stuck out well past the cab and could not be repositioned.
TYPE 8 (introduced 1975) mirror head could be flipped over than pushed out giving a more expansive view (as pictured).
