I have a 1998 f-150. I have notised that if you get on it, When the motor gets high rpm then you can here noise comeing from the motor. Is this normal? Somebody told me that all fords do this, but he drives a chevy. Shows how much he knows. The noise is like a pinging noise not really a taping noise. I never thaught it would be this hard to describe a noise. Please help.
IF YOUR GONNA BE A BEAR, BE A GRIZZLY!!!
Could be detonation, try a bottle of fuel injector cleaner and try a higher octane fuel. If it goes away, then you may have some carbon built up in the cylinders. It may even need the MASS AIR SENSOR cleaned and a new fuel filter.

I have a 97 F150 with a 4.6 and when I am climbing a hill or when acceleration is needed at highway speeds I can also hear a funny pinging sound. It is very hard to figure where it is coming from but it is loud that my wife heard it!
I too have pinging under moderate and hard acceleration. I am looking for suggestions as how to remedy the problem. Some specifics: I tried a few bottles of injector cleaner and higher octane fuel - no change. Any hints?

It's hard to diag spark knock without looking at the fuel trims and the MAF baro.
In most cases when you have spark knock and it doesn't go away with higher octane gas you probably have a MAF bad, BUT it's not always true........you could have carbon build up on the piston in which case you would need to de-carbon the engine.
I have the same problem in my 01 van. I had one service guy ride with me and he acknowledged the noise but was clueless as to it's cause. His only suggestion was the detonation thing mentioned above. Of course he also said that my belt was fine and didn't need changing. So I squeeled my van to a different dealership 3 days later where they found that both the belt and tensioner needed replacement. I plan on taking the van back to the 2nd dealership to investigate this sound and see what they say.
I know you might not want to hear this but this is justa guess.. Could it be a main bearing going bad? If they become mishaped for some reason that would cause it it possibly make a clanking type sound.

You don't want too
I know people say you can.......but....it's pretty bad for the sensor
BUT! if you do clean it......LET IT COOL DOWN!!!!! that little bugger gets HOT AS HECK........once it's cold....try some electrical cleaner you find at radio shack or so and just spray it.....don't use a q-tip like people say.....thats useless
