Wheel Bearing / Stud Question

Hello all,

I purchased my 2000 F250 SD with the 7.3L and ZF6 approximately 1.5 years ago, it currently has 113,xxx miles on it. Over the weekend I rotated the tires myself for the 1st time. On my front driver's side I noticed that the studs do not protrude past the lug nuts like they do on the other three corners. Attached picture of both hubs for reference.

I know this wheel bearing was replaced by a tire/suspension shop by the previous owner but I don't know how long ago it was. I've put 12k miles on it the way it is.

My question is does this need to be addressed? The way I see it I have three options from least to most difficult.

A) Leave it as is
B) Replace the studs with the correct length studs
C) Replace the whole wheel bearing

I would appreciate any advice on the options above. If it is suggested to replace the whole wheel bearing what brand is recommended? This is a non ABS truck.

Thanks for any insight.

Driver's side studs.

Passenger's side studs.

I would be concerned with the different stud lengths.

Most here recommend Timken, I have used them too.

99-02 use Timken 515020

I believe you can buy the ABS version and block it off to save some cash.

So you suggest replacing the whole wheel bearing vs pressing the studs out and replacing them with the appropriate ones?

A wheel bearing for my truck, same as yours was $185 shipped.

A couple of hand tools, snap ring pliers and a three jaw puller, 1-2 hours of time and you'll be done.

If you want you could swap studs to the old one and have it on the shelf as a spare.

I recently found a worn through ABS line, $180 at Ford, going with the wheel bearing gave me a new line. Now I have a spare.

Before I did anything, pull that wheel, caliper, and rotor and see if a spacer was behind that. You might pop the wheel off and find it, or pull the caliper and rotor and take a look. Hard for me to wrap my head around a hub coming with improper lugs. It's worth the investigation. Furthermore, the lugnuts look like they are seated to the crown of the lug studs, with no threads obvious. I really wouldn't be worried about them if they torque to spec, but I'm very curious what is beneath. My bet is you find a spacer that was just replaced by the shop without thought being the only wheel on the truck that displays short lugs. Being the hub that got replaced BTW is an indication of a spacer. They wear more quickly due to the offset.

Pictures please.

I'll take a look at that when I get an opportunity. But with my naked eye the wheel in question appears to be no more offset than the other side.

Just studied your photo again. Was out working on the fifth wheel awning that some 450 pound guy camping next to us decided to lean heavy on the forward rafter and bent it to the point it wouldn't retract and was thinking about your post.

Anyway, it was wrong for me to say dig deeper, if there were offset spacers they would be right behind the wheel on the outboard side of the hub. I'm not seeing the gap in your photos. I think your lugs are definitely short. But I wouldn't be too alarmed if they torque out to spec . You can still use the same Super-duty restroom as the rest of us even if you do have a short lug.

If it runs out well, sleep well.

Just a side note to followers of drive-train parts. Detroit axle has been my go to. Products are awesome, warranty second to none and free shipping and returns virtually anywhere.

Top notch. Dirt cheap, Quality. Check it out.

You can go to a junk yard and get some used studs or buy them new thru your local parts store.

Thanks for all the replies. I guess I'll leave it alone for now and replace the whole hub assembly when time permits. The lugs are torqued to spec.

While I'm in there maybe I'll consider making a whole weekend out of it and replace the ball and universal joints at the same time.

I know everyone around here likes pictures. Here's the truck on the way home from the lake a few weekends ago.
