I think I have a wheel bearing going out on my 2000 4x4...Talked with a mech today and he told me they are $385/side..does that sound right? Also, is there anyone out there that has done this themselves..if so, how difficult was it to do? Id like to think I could do it myself instead of $80/hr, but I also dont want to get in over my head...thanks.
Based on the date of your original post, you've probably had the issue taken care of, but......
$385? Wow, I didn't get such a deal recently when I had wheel bearing problems on my 99 SD 7.3 4x4. I went to every parts store in the area and no one carried them. My mechanic (also longtime friend) told me only ford would supply the part and his shop discount price was $485. He didn't charge any labor fee. Maybe mine was more because the dealer here is 'less than fair' to be nice; or, maybe because I have the 4 wheel ABS.
The bearings now are a large sealed unit that house the hub. The lug studs are also attached to it. If you've got a decent amount of tools, I'd say it wouldn't be too hard. Based on the date of your original post, you've probably had the issue taken care of....
Remember, the lug studs have to be transferred from the old unit to the new one (or buy new studs) and they're not easy to get off w/out damage. TRust me, I learned the hard way.
yeh i did replace them last week...I have to have the brakes done because it wore the pads down ....I cannot believe how much these bearings cost and the freq. that they go out!
