Hello all and thanks,
Get to it
2008 f250 5.4gas 189000 miles
just got it last week at a good price
because the transmission overheats after 40 mins at highway speeds other than that you can drive it all over town stop and go all day no problems,
I have only had it do it 3 times once on purpose, I don’t let it go much past half and I park it and wait.
it has the small extra cooler, when she is running hot the cooler is cold.
i optimistically disconnected the cooler lines and cranked her other day, she has flow but the fluid was pretty dark so I drained and dropped the pan, new deep pan filter $50+. 16-17 quarts $7 a pop, she ran fine all day till I had a 30 min ride at 60. That was 3rd time.
Id like to figure out the exact component causing the overheat. It’s like it stops pumping at certain rpm or temp?
or should I just find another trans?
I can pull this trans easy just like to know from anyone who has had this issue.
Are you sure it's overheating? Have you checked fluid temp with a ir temp sensor? It's possible your problem is the temp sender and not a overheating problem.

The first time it ran hot it got close to the yellow and the trans kinda shifted weird as I was getting off interstate. And that sucker is HOT the lines ice cold,
im leaning towards the cooler bypass valve which I think would be ok to modify as I live in SC it doesn’t get that cold.

It is most likely the cooler bypass valve. It's located in the pump body. To get to it you remove the transmission, remove the torque converter, remove the pump, and it's in the pump body. You can't just remove it, it will screw up the flow and you will trash the trans. You need to fix what's wrong with the valve.
I read some threads on removing it, shaving the pin and flipping it end for end and reinstalling it. Gonna try that but I’m thinking while I got the trans out I should do everything I can to ensure proper pumping, maybe replace whole pump deal?
This trans shifts great I’d like to just fix it.
it already has the small external cooler up front.
I do not plan on diverting from marks plan, I’m gonna get her open and see what I can fix. I’ll post a new tread once I get to it w pics. I have done many trans swaps and been into a few older and newer.
My main concern after searching for a rebuilt tran is I’m getting told there is a lot of options on the 5r110w, I do have the tag on the side w the build date and wheel base etc but I hate ordering wrong parts. So I may ask for help soon, lol.
