Trans temp opinion

What do you guys think?
My truck is an 01,4x4,Die, with an auto.
Ambient temp.75F to 85F,
Trans temp. (comming out of trans and going to the cooler) is running about 150F-160F. Fluid temp in pan is holding around 140F-150F. Driving speed is between 45mph to 55mph. And no I'm not getting on it at any time. This is normal driving in 2H. I have had it run up to 180F/185F when driving down a dirt road. Do you think it is running too hot?

Sounds about right. the hottest I have ever seen mine is 180* w/ 100* ambient. that's in city stop/go traffic.

all you can do is keep and eye on it and if you are uncomfortable with the temps you see, that is a perfect reason to add a trucool or 6oh cooler. i want one, but haven't gotten around to it.

Like David said, your pan temps look normal. ussually 70 degrees abovet OAT - not towing. The torque Conv can generate alot of heat when unlocked so you can see higher temps around town/stop & go type driving.

Thanks for the replays. It's the stock cooler for the 7.3. It just seems like it is running alot hotter than it use to. I had to have the tranny replaced a few years ago so I'm pretty cautious about the trans temps. I agree, I should put a tru-cool on it.

It may be, but from my understanding the coolers are setup completely different on the 08s and probably wouldn't be much of an easy swap in.

I don't know how it *could* be much bigger; the 31-row is bigger (and more expensive) than most radiators you'll see in cars...

31-row on top, factory 7.3L 9-row on bottom:

If I've posted this good idea before I apologize, but I can alway claim Oldetymers disease. Whenever in stop and go traffic, or at a long red light, waiting at a train crossing, always shift into neutral, you will be amazed at how quickly your tranny temp will climb when being left in drive and being held back by the brake.

Something I found interesting, after simply switching from a single to a triple disc, nothing esle changed, my temps are much higher when unlocked around town.

Sometimes I see up to 190-195 on 85 degree days when alot of stop and go. But on the highway, locked up, she's golden, as with the single, around 150
