Rule on thumb when you insert the dipstick Hash Marks are face up or towards the engine I know it does rotate in tube try it 2-3 times see if you get the same reading
Always wipe it clean, then reinsert to get the most accurate reading.
Did you take a reading on the dipstick right after it was changed? It may have been at the middle point since it was changed and you weren't aware. Monitor it from this point to see if it moves.

I always wipe it clean with a towel. I did look at the dipstick rigjt after the oil change and I want to say that it looked close enough. However I dont remember and will monitor from this point going forward. I di put exacly 8.8 quarts of oil in it.
thank you... i will keep my eye on the levels for sure. I kept the photos from here with the date and milage so I can tefrence that two months down the road.
Thank you again for the explanation!!
No problem. I went through many consumption tests before the TSB was issued, and ultimately had my engine replaced. Good luck.
Hi guys. After my fist dealer oil change I found out that they forgot to put mt air filfer back on.. when I got home the service called me to tell me that they have foegoten to install it back. So I did my own oil change but with these new dip sticks with thise two holes I am having hard time reading it.
that is the oil level after the truck has been sitting for about 30 min.
Does that look ok? I have put in 8.8 quarts of oil as recommended by the manual.
As dirty as that oil is, I suspect there is quite a bit of mileage on the oil. Mine at 5,000 is hard to read on the stick. That’s why I’m believing it was burned, not shorted. If that’s fresh oil, the OP needs to take it elsewhere for a change. No way new oil should be close to that dirty after a COUPLE thousand miles.

This is my second oil change. First time I changed it was at the dealer at 7,000 miles when it got to 40% oil life. The second time I changed the oil myself at 13,000 miles and now I’ve got 14,448 on the truck. I also thought that the oil was a bit dirty for only having 1,400 miles on it after change. My first oil change I have switched to full syntetic instead of systetic blend. Full SYNTETIC is what Im currently running.
I thought maybe iI was going to going in for the oil consumption test, but hoping not at this point. I had the dealer change the oil at 8000 miles (had them doing warranty stuff as well). I didn't check it right after the change (why would I? Answer below, lol), checked the level at about 10K and it was down two quarts! Yikes! Topped it off and have been checking it regularly. It's now up to about 11K and the level hasn't dropped at all. So I'm suspecting the mechanic never put the correct 8.8 quarts in. (That's the answer to the above question of why check it right after a change!) So knock wood that I'm not going to need a new engine...
I do have a question. If I end up taking the truck in for the oil consumption test, will they give me any grief for changing the oil myself?
No. They’ll change it, add 7.7 quarts. Mark dipstick. Run truck to them, let drain down 15 minutes. Add one quart, run truck, let drain down, mark again That’ll be the 1 quart range.
Sounds good. One more question. Lets say I was too clumsy when changing the oil and did not account for the oil filter sucking up half quart of oil or so (but im prety sure I put in the right amohnt) I put in 5 quarts and then this much afterwards
And lets say I dont have any consumption, down the road should I still be worried about oil consumption? If I understand this correctly It ether consumes oil or it doesn’t.. right?
