Hello all, Hope all is well.......
Here is a crazy question. I have a 1997 F150 and the front dif fluid was spitting out of the overflow tube. I must have lost everything because i hear grinding now. Can I remove the gears from the pumpkin and drive it without 4x4 for a while until i have the time and money to install new gears? If it can be done do i need to worry about anything such as the cv joints or whatever?
you cant do anything in place.. TOO tight to get the cover off and work on the pumpkin. If you drop the axle down, then yes you can remove the insides and you will probably find a bad bearing... gears may or maynot be a problem... you front wheels are engaged to the pumpkin all the time. You cant disengage the axle shafts so they tires will turn the axles and pumpkin anytime you move.......... You could remove the front axle half shafts, but they spline into the wheel HUB and BIG nut on the outside to hold the wheel bearings tight... If the axle half shaft is removed, you would need to put something like a 1 inch bolt, 6 inches long thru the hub and tighten a nut on the outside to hold the bearings together............ probably time to look into the pumpkin.
