Very Basic Question

I have a 2016 Explorer XLT 4WD XLT.

No fatory hitch.

How can I determine towing capacity after I install an aftermarket hitch?

Thanks,
Bob in Minnesota

If you do not have one of the factory trailer tow packages (Class II or Class III), you are limited to 2000 lbs.

Roger that.

When I look up the VIN I see this listed: "Towing Equipment -inc: Trailer Sway Control" I don't know what this means.

Is there a straightforward way to complete the following sentence? "The Vehicle with VIN ______________ can tow ____lbs with an aftermarket hitch assembly and no further modifiction?

No.

Ford's official towing guide says that ANY 2016 Explorer without the factory tow package is limited to 2000 lbs.

You do not have a factory hitch, so you do not have a factory tow package.

That is as straightforward as I can make it.

You do not have a factory hitch, so you do not have a factory tow package. ....
What would be the rating with the factory tow package?
Does the tow "package" include upgrades like better springs, anti-roll bars, shocks, trans cooler?
I wouldn't think the brakes or frame would be any different, but maybe.
Springs, bars, shocks and coolers can be upgraded.
I see a Draw-Tite 76034 Class III aftermarket receiver on the market and with a WDH the tow capacity was listed at 5k.

Looks like the class 3 towing package includes an engine oil cooler and the associated wiring along with the hitch

if you want to tow more than 2000 lbs, it would be wise to look st the engine oil cooler on one with the towing package to see if it is easily added to your vehicle.

a transmission oil cooler is not mentioned, but would be wise to add if possible.
It may not be possible as many newer vehicles run the coolant to the transmission, rather than the reverse as has been the convention since thre dawn of time. Cannot speak with authority as to the way the explorer cools it’s transmission., just throwing it out there as something to be aware.

2000 lbs unless you make some upgrades.

2016 Tow Guide reference: https://madocumentupload.marketingas...7b71f&v5=False

The GVWR and maximum trailer weight spec varies with engine choice, axle ratio, and tow package. See the 2019 RV and Trailer Towing Guide page 22 for the applicable Explorer chart.

See page 13 for a list of “required equipment”.

See page 14 for the content list for each towing package.

See page 28 for factory hitch ratings.

See pages 29 and 30 for “weight” definitions and related discussion.

HTH,
Jim / crewzer

Even if you add all these items your vehicle is still only rated to tow the 2000# associated with it's VIN number as far as insurance and legality goes.

Another thing to consider as well is trailer brakes. Even with an Explorer equipped with the factory, 5000 pound tow rating, I would still want a trailer brake controller on it.

The tow package explorers are equipped with eco boost engines with gearing to match. How is your explorer equipped?

All of the factory tow packages come with a trailer hitch.

He said that he does not have a trailer hitch.

Ergo, he does not have a factory tow package.

All 2016 Explorers, doesn't matter what engine, doesn't matter what gearing, doesn't matter what trim, ALL 2016 Explorers without a factory tow package are limited to a 2000 lbs. tow rating.

Whether he chooses to ignore that or not is up to him.
