02 Eddie Bauer Explorer towing
I have the 4.0L SOHC 4x2 and an Axle code of 45. The truck came with a Class II towing package. According to that package it can handle up to 3500lbs.
I am wanting to purchase a boat which on it's trailer and fully loaded will weigh around 5200lbs.
If I install a Class III package can I tow this weight?

By "package", do you mean installing the engine oil cooler and 3.73 rear gears along with the Class III/IV hitch? If you just change the receiver hitch, then 3500# is what Ford recommends. When you load up the boat with gear/fluids and the EB with warm bodies, you'd probably be over the limit even with the factory tow package.

Thanks, I've realized it's more than the truck can handle. I want the boat but, now have to consider buying a truck. My wife says it's not a good time right now. Hell, this is like having another kid. When is it a good time.lol

She's right; there's never a "good" time to buy a boat, and with Springtime here it might be the worst time for prices. On the other hand, sometimes you just gotta go for it. One tip: Don't buy ANYTHING without her seeing and approving it first, especially if you want her to be 1st Mate! (I speak from experience on that subject) Good luck!
