Ok, new here, picked up my new project this past Saturday. Got the short bed Sat morning, it needs a drivers door and bed front panel and some small rust repairs. Found the long bed later the same day after talking to someone "who knew where one like that was for sale". The red short bed has a 302, three speed, no power anything. That's the one I want to build. The long bed, parts truck, has a 302, automatic (c4, I presume), a/c, power brakes and power steering. The only thing I haven't figured out is the gear ratio... deciphering the VIN,as I read it, could be a 3.00 or 3.70. Can anyone tell me from the VIN plate?
Looks like a bunch of great info on this site, I can't wait to get started!
This a project between me and my son.. 76 short bed 76 long bed VIN plate
I like finding the axle tags intact after all these years too. But to make sure we have all the info, is that Axle Code on the warranty plate a "12J" or something else?
I think 12J sounds familiar, so it's probably so. We'll just have to let someone with more knowledge interpret the numbers.
There is a tag on the red short bed axle, and it is covered in crud! Haven't looked at the other axle yet. Both VIN plates do show "12J". According to a website I looked at, it could be a 3.00 or 3.70..
I'll get under them this weekend and pull and clean the tags!
