I checked the gap at the clutch. I found that the center bolt was missing and if not for the fan being so close, the plate would have come off. I bought another ac clutch, thinking I could bring it back if the old one looked ok. After removing the fan, I took off existing clutch plate and pulley. They were pretty badly grooved and seemed worn out. I tried to take out the coil to replace that. I didn’t see another snap ring. I knocked it with a rubber mallet, but it didn’t come loose. I needed the truck the next day so I put it back together with new clutch disc and pulley, set the gap. I thought I was good, but 2 hours up the interstate I lost AC again. Now it doesn’t work at all, even in the mornings.
Anyone know if a gear puller will remove the coil? I’m going to dig in one more time Sunday before taking it to another shop. After wrestling the fanclutch last month, I can get to this pretty easy now. I also want to jump the relay and see if the compressor will turn on at all. After not being used for a couple years, 2 hours of it working may have shocked the system. I think I found the relay under the hood, not sure what number to give power to.
Thanks again for any help.
Ok, I was able to jump the relay and the AC came on nice and cold right away. So this weekend, I want to install the new coil, and change out the high pressure switch. I’ll make sure the relay is good, that will be easy enough to replace tomorrow.
I found some manifold gauges as well, so I’ll check the readings before I dig into it.
I’ll try a 3 jaw puller. Hopefully I have room without removing the compressor. I’m sure I didn’t do the old one any good pounding on it last week. The new pulley took a little force to get that on too.
I was able to get the coil off pretty easy with a 3 jaw puller. It took a lot of force to install the new one. Carefully got it started with a rubber mallet. Thanks for all the advice, ac seems to be working fine again.
