Gang,
I continue to work on the cab of my 61 flareside and are about to tackle rust issues in the step area on passenger side. There is the usual amount/location of corrosion found in this age truck. I need to replace step, riser and section of support under under step (rocker?). Are there any critical things that I must or must not do during repairs? Will I need to brace door opening? Should I replace panels entirely or just cut and weld? Thanks for sharing your experiences. Tim
Wow pics would sure help. The answer to your questions is sometimes yes, sometimes no, depending. In cases like if you are actually separating the front of the cab from the back for complete rockers and the floor is shaky then yes you may want to clamp the door opening, but that also depends on if its off or mounted and if so if the mounts are good etc etc etc. Too many variables…
Like I said pics would be needed to give you any specific advice.
Thanks cheddar. Upon further inspection, I believe I will be able to leave step and riser in place. About 12" or so of rocker panel needs replacing, along with lower door pillar on each side. Since the cab is mounted and secure, I'm thinking I can fix rocker first before fixing pillars. I'll keep the step and riser on hand in case things go afoul. I'll snap a few pix on my next trip to the barn.
No sweat it sounds like you have a plan. They make all those parts so you should have no problem. I am going to have to fabricate about ten inches of floor in my cab that involves the indented floor bolt, I can't justify buying a whole panel because most of the floor is good, that will be a challenge but on the other side there was enough rust for me to buy the whole floor panel and cab mounts. I got mine from carolina-classics.com and I would highly recommend that you take a look at the parts they make, very robust perfect fit. I haven't welded mine in yet, I just got down to the frame but I'll be posting a thread on my progress soon.
