I've used a mirror and flashlight without spinning. Couldn't really tell though.
Also hooked drill again to speedo cable and it operates smoothly.
Truck might be going on hoist today (assuming 72 blazer gas tank swap goes as planned) and will have someone spin it while doing mirror and flashlight trick. If we get a good look and everything appears normal how would you explain apple coring of driven gear?

I think I would get a look at the drive gear first before deciding what to do.
If I remember, there is a ball bearing notch in the drive gear and the bolt on output yoke is what sandwiches it all together. I haven’t had one apart in about 30 years.
Its pretty easy to pull the extension housing off if you’ve got a hoist and some air tools.

If it's not the drive gear I don't know what else it could be. Is it possible to get the drive gear 180 degrees backward? That could explain why it cut's that driven gear so quick.
Gas tank to longer than we thought. So will have to wait on putting it up hoist to check.

The lines on the gear face the same way either way it is installed.
Sure the gear could be bad but you’re just guessing until you put eyes on it or pull the extension housing.

Fine, I'm just guessing until I put eyes on it. I agree with you.
Again, if it's not drive gear what else could it be?

I’m guessing the trans has been apart before.
Was it reassembled correctly? Did someone forget to install the ball or is the drive gear is loose on the shaft?
There’s only one was to find out, man. Take it apart.

Taking apart today. Where is ball located.
Never done it before but really want to get eyes on it.

I don’t remember whether it’s a ball or key but the gear is grooved on the inside and slides over the ball which prevents the gear from spinning.

I'm not sure about a ball myself, I'll let instig8r63 tell you about it, but there should be a spacer in there on the output shaft before the speedometer drive gear - if the spacer is not sandwiched in there then the drive gear would be slightly too far forward and might be a cause for premature wear.

Thanks Chad,
I found a schematic online and see the spacer. That was one item I was going to check was slop in the drive gear. It appears there is a round looking nut to rear of drive gear and wondering if it's loose or warn out. Either of those two conditions could make the drive gear move front/back which it seems could apple core the driven gear.
What I don't see is the little ball on the schematic.

Yeah I don’t see it either. It’s been a zillion years since I had one apart. I believe I remember the driven gear having a groove and a ball or key.

This drive gear is the same type of gear but for a different tire size/transmission/rear gearing. Pics are not great but a keyway or groove doesn't jump out at me. Not saying there isn't one for sure since it has been a long time since I had one apart like this either. I'm curious, too.

For some reason I’m picturing it similar to a T18 speedo drive gear.

Driven gear. Nothing before or after it on output shaft

Drive gear. Hard to tell in this picture but do believe it's the wrong one. When blown up on phone C5T?-?????-B-8. Think last three of middle portion are 266 or 268

Didn't find ball but copper/brass sleeve. It's pulled out of slot for picture purposes but as you insert driven gear into place it pushes sleeve into round opening.

Showing drive gear with nothing before or after.
