Def warning

I filled my Def fluid a couple weeks ago, warning light went away. I have only traveled about 400 miles since and my low DEF warning came on yesterday. I tried to add Def but it was practically full still. Anyone have any idea what could cause this?

I've read threads where the 11-16 guys had to let it go lower so it would figure it out. Alternatively, take it to the dealer to get the level reset.

2012 F250 4x4 CCSB A couple of years ago I had the 500 mile warning light come on way too soon based on prior operating history. I added more DEF and the idiot light did not go out. I was afraid that I would get into a false countdown situation. I called the dealer and he said to fill the DEF tank completely full up into the fill tube and then run it and the light should go out in 20 miles or so. It did. I have found recently that when the idiot light comes on, the DEF tank takes less than a 2.5 gallon jug that was usual .... maybe 1.75-2 gallons.

How do you normally put DEF in your truck? There's a pretty good explanation on how the DEF system determines how much DEF is left towards the end of this post - https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...def-usage.html. What I took away was that adding DEF prior to receiving the warnings confuses the way the truck determins how much DEF is left. Good news is that it appears there is a way your local dealer can reset this back to "normal".

I know this thread is for 11-16, but just in case someone with 2017+ is reading, that method isn't necessary for 2017+.

I didn't think this forum was for the 11 - 16 6.7s. Thought it was for all. Ford changed the way the truck determines how much DEF is left in the '17 +es? If so, good - it needed to be changed

The OP was asking about an 11-16, so I made sure I was clear on my comment. So the thread is specific to 11-16 but the forum is for all 6.7L years.
