Why do I need a WDH ...

(other than my receiver says 5000# max with weight carrying hitch and the boat/trailer weighs 6000#)?

You probably don't need a weight distribution hitch but you should upgrade your hitch if you are over weight rating. 1000 pounds is significant.

I presume you jest, but if the receiver is rated for a longitudinal (pulling) force of 10000# with WDH, 6000# should pose no problems. Longitudinal force is longitudinal force with or without a WDH, no?

Ball weight of 420# is within non-WDH specs.

Rear suspension has been supplemented with air bags (Air Lift 2000 run with just 10# pressure to keep things level), Bilstein 4600 shocks and Hellwig sway/roll bar. Given the long and low trailer, the tow is now very steady.

I personally say your fine provided you don't have a Class 3 hitch. The above combo is far above your boat and a WDH isn't possible.
