Engine Paint

For those who did it, what did you use? How hot do you think the engine gets (non exhaust pipes)? We are looking at some 500 degree paint now. Any areas you’d avoid painting?

Shes got a clean surface now so we figured it would be a good time to do it.

the engine will get to oil temp/antifreeze temp

The exhaust ports will burn off a bit, think EGTs here

don't paint gasket surfaces and bolt holes

Pick a color your dad likes

Yeah logic says somewhere around 200 given internal liquid temps.

I think we are leaning towards the new ford gray color.......that'll help show any leaks better with the lighter back drop

Last year I painted a 390 using catalyzed engine paint from a can - I purchased it from Eastwood. This stuff is cool- the can has two chambers ( one for paint and one for catalyst ) and you tap the button on the bottom to puncture the catalyst chamber when you're ready to use it. After that, you have up to a week to use the contents before it hardens inside the can.
I'm just now preparing to get the engine back in, so I don't have temperature experience with it yet, but it's rated to 650F. I know that the paint is quite hard once cured- much more than standard paints.
I wouldn't recommend and non-catalyzed spray can paints- they just don't last.

Thanks. It's a nice heavy duty pan, I did use their gasket. You have to follow directions and silicone the corners but sealed great.

I wish I had the time to get my block that clean when my engine was out. That is about as clean as it gets!
