I am putting my engine together and want to clean her up a bit. She's sandblasted and clean. Is there any engine paint to apply besides the high temp paint can type out there?
is it cost effective for a daily driver and more durable than spray cans?
thx for your reply
You would need Very High Temperature (VHT) paint for exhaust manifolds. I would think Eastwood would supply that also.
Now that you have the engine clean it would be a shame not to paint it. The few $ it costs makes a big difference when you lift the hood.
All of the manifold paints will require curing under temperature. Not really feasible when breaking in a new cam. Unless you can catch the wife gone and cure them in the oven. In the vehicle they need to be run thru a couple cyles of varying temperatures. As far as the engine paint, plain old Duplicolor Hi-Temp ceramic does just fine.
Just used Eastwood's Hi-temp Ceramic Engine Paint, in Dark Ford Blue, and liked it a lot. Could actually brush the paint on the intake or a block with no problem. Dries hard and glossy with a much better film thickness than any spray can engine paint. The only part of a car where I would spray it is on a smooth valve cover and oil pan. If you are lucky and have spray equipment then you can also get their activator to add and you will have a 2 part catalyzed paint for even better chemical resistance. Probably could still mix up a batch and brush it on also as there should be plenty of pot time.
Does the Eastwood cermamic paint smell after it get's really hot? I tried a VHT spray bomb on my manifolds and now everytime I pop the hood it wreaks of burnt paint. Is that normal? I have not used engine paints before.
If you mean intake manifold then the answer is no. If you mean exhaust manifold all I have ever used there is Eastwood's Hi-Temp paint for exhaust manifolds and have never smelled anything either.
dont use the high temp paint sold at advance or autozone rebult my sled and painted the engine and exhaust and within an hour of riding it all burned off
Eastwoods' hi-temp, cast-iron-look paint is the best I've ever used. As for the block and heads, anything will work. If you paint the heads, expect the paint to discolor around the exhaust ports, but otherwise it will be fine, no need for hi-temp paints.
