So this is the first diesel I've owned and most others that I've been in have been older model trucks. I did not test drive other trucks before buying so I have nothing to compare to, wish I did. I've read reviews and comments about how quiet these trucks are, some going as far as saying they've been asked if it was even running and not having to shut off at drive thru's. My experience so far, with not even 1k miles is that its definitely quieter than old diesels, but I wouldn't exactly say its quite. There is a definite diesel motor sound, if I were to compare it to a gas motor it would be one that needs a valve adjustment Haha. It seems to be more pronounced on first start up, until driven 20 ft or so, like something is on, making additional noise, and then shuts off once moving. The tapping/clicking also is louder under certain light throttle conditions and I have had to shut it down to place a drive thru order once. On the highway the engine noise is pretty quiet for a large motor.
Being new to this I'm just not sure what is normal and what isn't, when to be concerned. What things might I be hearing that are part of normal diesel operation that can be more noticeable at times?
Perfectly normal. If you tow anything, especially tow anything heavy, be sure and let it warm up good before towing. Otherwise, enjoy it.
Oh, and don't let anyone tell you "you won't even feel it pulling". Nonsense. It tows like nothing else, by I'm here to tell you I know my 5th wheel is back there.
Thank you Ed. I don't think ill ever experience towing a big 5th wheel, I will keep that in mind when doing any towing. Im still babying the truck, pulling away from a stops around town it feels like the 8k lb. brick that it is, but after a certain point in the pedal travel it really moves. I haven't given it too much yet, a little more as I get closer to the 1k mi. mark, but what I have felt is impressive and a bit surprising from such a large truck.
One sound that surprised me is a "typewriter" sound after a fresh oil change coming from the lower engine/oil pan area. Per Ford, it's completely normal and usually goes away within 1k miles after the oil change. It freaked me out the first time ( to the point of taking the truck back into the dealer).
I can confirm that it does go away after a bit & then the truck is back to normal.
What they said. All normal sounds. I will say when I pull my 6500lb 25ft bumper pull travel trailer the truck hardly knows its back there. It is a joy to tow with.
My truck was super quiet when I picked it up. Literally could tell we started it, and it was -25 C when I picked up. Fast forward to now, 50,000 km, and it’s not as quiet at all, but still very quiet compared to the 6 oh diesel before. It’s also considerably less smoky, stinky, smelling of fuel and soot, in that the emissions systems work so well it still has a clean tail pipe and you can’t even smell it’s a diesel in the garage with the door down. She makes some great sounds pulling and loaded, but it would be even better without the emissions muffling all the sounds. However, taphats the price you pay for clean diesel power.
There's no doubt my engine is running. The first few times I started it up in my garage I had a big ol' grin on my face. I consider the engine noise to be at a good level. Nowhere near the horrible rattle of a RAM but certainly not as quiet as a gas engine.
mine has definitely gotten louder and sounds more like the 6.0's of past, minus leaking coolant into areas you wouldn't want coolant of course. The other day i did shut it off in the drivethru for the first time, not anymore now that its back to 110 here. I'm at 38,000 miles on my 17.
Mine gets louder but I have noticed when I fill up in more farm orientated areas I assume they are getting better fuel it gets quieter and better mileage. To me my truck just has loud injection noises.

HAHA, Jim. You should have been around the old “Rattling Cat”!! Like the 1693!
I was trying to tell myself that it might get quieter with time, that maybe its from the factory fill oil and things still seating. Sounds like the opposite is true.
I have about 3500 miles on my 2019 and I love the sound. My first diesel so I have nothing to compare it to. It nice being able to dip into the throttle and not having to shift down two gears.

Well, when you decide it's time to get a wild hair, get going about 15 or 20 mph, then punch it. You will get a little bit of turbo lag, but when it kicks in, you will have a smile that might not go away for a few days (weeks). I can tell you, it feels really good being smushed to the seat when tat turbo gets mad. Let us know how if fees when you let 'er rip.
The 6.7L is extremely quiet at idle. Quieter than my Dmax and way quieter than a Cummins which has the best (loudest) idle sound of the 3. The Powerstroke is on par with the others once you increase the engine rpm however, and definitely has the most turbo noise.
