No Start

I know, another no start thread.
My truck has been sitting for several months as I am not home. I had my son starting it regularly. Before the batteries died, he told me something was wrong with the key. He said the ignition cylinder would just spin and the truck would not start, would not even turn over. Like something is not engaging. I guess I should inform you all that it is a 99 F-350 7.3. My father in law says the key just spins around freely. Now, I should explain that he probably couldnt even put oil in his truck so I dont trust his diagnosis......

I was video chatting my son and he tried to start it. It looked like the key was functioning properly, as in turning to the on position, was able to be turned to the start position, but still nothing from the engine. The batteries were charged at the time.
Could this be as simple as needing a new ignition cylinder? A mechanic friend came and looked at it. He is quite competent. He told my wife something along the lines of a pin breaking off... Said it would cost $250 to fix.

Not being home for a bit longer I cant take the thought of it sitting so long.
I'm fairly certain it is not the starter....
Thoughts?

Since you had a mechanic you know physically look at it, I guess I’d be inclined to trust him at this point and have him fix it.

It could be as simple as needing a new key cylinder. The end of the lock cylinder could have broken off. Until you remove it, you don't know.

This is a typical lock cylinder. You can go to your locak parts house, Advance, Autozone, etc, and purchase one.

I guess you do NOT trust your mechanic...

Ford has had key and assorted key linkage issues for MANY YEARS...

I hope that when your family starts the truck in the past.. they let it RUN 20 minutes minimum..
driving it would be much better on the truck..
How are you keeping the truck Fueled up ?

retired mechanic...

I had my boy starting it and letting it run for 30 minutes. My wife refuses to drive it and my son is only 13 so..... The only fuel in it is what I left in it, with some diesel treatment.
I DO trust my mechanic, but he also wanted to tow it to his shop which will double the cost. If it could be something as simple as the lock cylinder I will have my boy switch it out for 1/10th the cost.
I've read a lot of threads on here about the cylinder, was just wondering if there was another common culprit.

Thanks all

Neutral safety switch or clutch switch if everything shuts off when key is in crank position.

So, over video chat I walked my boy through the process of removing the old key cylinder. Luckily that is the culprit. The dongle at the end has broken off and is stuck in the ignition. Just need to find a way to remove it now.

After reading a little bit further, and putting 2+2 together. I may have a problem. The steering wheel is locked, and the tip of the old cylinder is stuck behind this green piece that has rotated forward allowing me to remove the old cylinder. My son could not push the new cylinder in far enough that it would engage and rotate back to the off position. Can the green piece and the metal piece behind it be pulled out without damaging it?
When the steering wheel locks on this thing it can be a BEAST to unlock. I dont think having him try to turn the broken off tip in the ignition with a screwdriver while shacking the steering wheel would work.

Any thoughts?
