The key for me appreciating the fuel economy of my 6.7 is having owned a lifted V10 with 4.88 gears! The V10 got 6 MPG towing and 9 MPG when unloaded. I have 7000 miles on the 6.7 and my cumulative is 12.5 MPG. That includes about 2000 miles towing. The other 5000 are an even split of freeway and city miles. Before a recent 1700 mile trip pulling my 12,000 pound fifth wheel, my cumulative was around 15 MPG. Like has been said many times before, the only way to get significantly better fuel economy is to slow down. It doesn't matter if it's a gas or diesel motor, speed kill fuel economy.
I don't worry about it. If I drive 12,000 miles a year, the difference between getting 12.5 MPG and 15.5 MPG is 186 gallons. At the current national average of $2.99/gallon for diesel, that's $556 a year, or $46 a month, or $10.69 a week. I would say the peace derived from not worrying about a couple MPG is easily worth $10 a week!
So I do have a small SUV as a crasher and use the truck 1-2 days a week. I do travel with the truck occasionally but mostly do short trips. I do drive like
grandpa but am averaging 10.5 mpg. It'll take me 4 years to get to 10k miles so I'll be patient. I guess I'm wondering if anyone has tried high flow cats, muffler delete, new intake or a tuner and what results you've encountered.
I only have 10k on my truck so far, but each time I've checked, my dash has only been 1/10th MPG off at most. VERY surprised, but it's reading correctly.
Me too! I reset my Trip2 on May 1st. My 2K mile average since then is 15.9 MPG. Rural/small town environment, occasional trip to "the cities", lots of cold starts. 4.30 gears.
My on the dash mpg is spot on (yeah shocking) my 2017 6.7, CCLB 4.10 rear diff, DRW in signature is getting 15.9 in the city, can get it up to 17.9-18 on the highway not towing and doing the speed limit. I've only got 11,888 miles on mine (yeah that's all) towing I can get 9-9.8 towing 18K 5th wheel. Definitely didn't buy it for it's mpg, got it to tow my heavy 5th wheel. Love my Beast!!!! He's a head turner!!
I have a 19 6.7 supercab dually and my mileage so far has been as high as 14.3 and as low as 11.7. This is empty driving. I came from a Ram 6.7 that averaged much better.
My 17 F250 Lariat 6.2 3.73 gets me mid 14s mpg if I'm not towing much. As a general contractor I pull a job trailer or dump trailer usually at least 3 days a week at about 4500 and 6000 respectively. I'll hand calc my mileage every so often and it's always within .1 or so. From delivery to currently over 25k miles my average mpg is at 13. That includes all my usual towing and a fair amount of 4wd in the New England winters as well. Mostly rural and suburban, rolling terrain. I have taken it on a couple 500-800 mile trips and can see high 16s low 17s for highway and I tend to keep it around 80mph. I came from a 15 Ram 1500 5.7 with 3.92 that averaged about 15.5 doing the same work over the 2 years I had it. I'll take the 2 mpg less for a truck that is more capable and feels more solid doing what I do.
In my '18 6.7 Dually with 4:10's I'm getting about 14.8 mpg on the highway, cruise set at 70 mph in S. Florida flatlands. Towing my 5er I hover around 10.5 mpg.
When I had the '15 6.7 SRW with 3:31's I could avg 18+ mpg at 70 mph. Towing the same 5er I actually got to 11.5 mpg for about 7-8K miles. My Dually holds the load much better but I am guessing the difference in towing mpg is due to the rear gears. The engine is a good 4-500 rpm's higher with the Dually.
My best tip, ALWAYS drive with a stout tailwind! 3.73 gears, with a 30 mph tailwind last week at 70 for three hours moderately flat I got 17.2! I pushed reset once on the hwy. Return trip dropped to 13.6
here is what I usually write about mileage on my rig. 6.2l 3.73 gears and about 10,000 miles.
When loaded for travel, not towing, and level ground at 60 cruises at 16.5 mpg, 70 level ground it drops to 14.5-15 depending on air temp and winds, and at 78 I feel good or lucky at 13.5. Around town 13-13.5. Towing about 7500-10,000 lbs hwy at 65mph I average 9.0 flat and level. Super steep hills, or high head winds, all bets are off for the brick!
