Had my dually for about 6k miles so far, it now has 41k on it. Last week I got a warning after startup, 500 miles till DEF empty. I drove a mile to the store, started truck and it said 499 till empty. I thought the DEF tank was full because I was pretty sure I just topped it off after seeing it was less than 50 percent after a trip with the camper. Warning never came back up, afterwards I bought 3 jugs at wally world and topped off, took about 2 quarts.
Today after starting I got 50 miles to 50 mph and a warning light on the cluster and it went off in about a mile.
What the heck is going on here?
Sounds like you need to get the system reset or something, there’s a DEF thread going around here that’s kind of talking about exactly what you’re reporting happening.
I won't fill it again till I get a message. I hope it can straighten itself out, but I only filled it to the top after the 499 came up, unwarranted. Maybe filling it up when it said under half was the culprit but what a BS system to screw up when it's full. I guess a float wouldn't work in all that crusty urea.
That happened to me while 4,000 miles from home towing my 5th wheel. I added DEF to my truck and the warning didn't go away. I tried everything to reset the warning like disconnecting both batteries but nothing changed. I figured that I would get tom my destination and find a dealer but the message went away. It has not come back as of yet been 2 years. I wouldn't worry about it. On a side note just because you get the 1/2 full tank you cant get a 2.5 gallon box in there. Now I just wait till the message comes on the screen which hasnt happened in a long time. Maybe the dealer is filling my DEf and not tell me. I got friends there.
