Appt with the dealership set for Friday. I will be getting a code reader too (any recommendations?).

Just buy the adapter and install forscan on your computer. Give you more options/features than a code reader. A decent adapter is $40-$80 and forscan is free. Plus, you get to learn a new skill. Win, win. lol.

...and of course, on the eve of my appointment at the dealership the light turns off.

I'm going anyway.

Despite the CEL turning off, the ECU may have stored the code(s).

So some "blah blah blah" valve was sticking, it appears. It was something I had never heard of before.
