rear drum brake question

So I attempted to attack refurbishing my rear drum brakes this weekend and think I ran into a problem.

Should the front shoe have a smaller contact surface than the rear? The set the auto parts store sold me are all the exact same length, but seems incorrect.

Should be short shoe front, long shoe rear.

Normally the rear shoe is a little longer but I've seen new sets that are the same length. and they work fine.
