My question is can I get the turbo compressor cover off on the vehicle like the super duty 7.3 L?
I’ve already removed three out of the 48 mm bolts to take it off, the lower wall is a pain but I was just wondering if it’s even worth trying to get it out?
I was planning on changing out the compressor wheel on My girlfriends 96 power stroke. We changed the intake boot on the turbo and I noticed that some of the fans on the compressor wheel were kind of chunked out. I have a wicked wheel laying around in the shop for a power stroke 7.3 and figured I would throw it on.
I got it to come off. PITA. had to cut a 8mm wrench halfway and turn the bottom bolt bit by bit. Getting It on with new compressor was harder. But I got it. I did use a impact on it. I know they say not to. But had to. Truck has 251k miles. And the impeller was screwed up
The new compressor wheel isn’t impressive. I had it laying around from my super duty that I took off. Probably an eBay wheel. It’s a 9 blade billet wheel. No more, maybe less boost, we will see in the long run how good it is though. Should’ve just ordered a WW2 or a Riffraff wheel

Compressor cover off
Compressor removed
Someone really doesn't know what they are doing.
That is a dusted turbo.
Engine might have suffered some cylinder damage.
Compression test needed and look with bore scope for wall scoring
You just compromised the the impellar shaft by using the impact gun, don't be surprise if it fails in the future. The compressor wheel looks like if got hot by something.
I’m expecting to replace the turbo in the future. Near future, so I’m just crossing my fingers for now.
I believe the engine does have some issues with compression. The truck will not start even when warm outside unless you wait for glow plugs. I mean, could be glow plugs I suppose but my mind says you don’t need to wait for glow plugs at 80° outside
Not starting around 80F could be a crappy starter, weak batteries, or corrosion. BTDT. I stop using glow plugs when in the low 70s in the AM...just unplugged the relay from the ECU.
