This afternoon (while hitching up my fifth) I finally decided it was time to purchase a dedicated step stool / step ladder; when my fifth wheel is attached there is simply no way I can climb into the bed of my (non-lifted) truck. It's a bi**h getting old(er) - but it beats the alternative.
I'm thinking of storing it in the bed; are there any recommendations on decent light-weight steps/ ladders that are cheap enough so that if it's been stolen it can be economically replaced - yet one not susceptible to the weather elements if left alone?
I just take along a good 4' step ladder. Not a perfect solution but it lays across the back of the bed between the hitch and the tailgate or the hitch and the tool box just fine. Comes in handy for other things on the camper as well. Obviously the ground surface matters but that always does.. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Werner-4...E&gclsrc=aw.ds
This morning I was at my RV dealer (drop off for t'stat problem) and across the street was a Lowes.
They didn't have a large assortment on site but this one met my minimums and came home with me; under $50 out the door (with my military discount).
Whatever is chosen keep in mind the weight rating matters. The 225lb rating can be touch and go for most average size guys,( maybe not so average) especially outdoors when some surfaces may not be completely level. At 200lbs I generally find the 250lb rated ladders about the minimum I feel comfortable using, the 300lb rated ladders, even better.

Those fiberglass ones are nice, had my doubts till I used one. Around here you would need to lock it up. A friend did AC work and went up on roof of a quick mart, wasn't up there 5 minutes. Had to call for help because someone stole the Werner ladder.
I have this one from HD. Cheap, lightweight and enough steps to reach into the bed and a few other things around the 5th wheel, inside and out.
I have a tonneau cover so the ladder is out of sight when I'm not hitched up. When traveling I just toss it in ahead of the 5th wheel hitch and can
step on my extended running board to reach in a grab it when needed.
