Exclamation Fuel Problems

I have replaced my tanks, put in a new fuel pump, and filters, all new fuel lines and I am still having problems with spratic fuel pumping. At times it will pump and the filter will be full, and then it will dry out and die. I have to prime the carburator and sometimes it will pump and other times it will not. I also noticed that when I am driving if I have to idel for a period of time it will die. It does fine as long as I keep driving an don't put too much load on the engine. The truck had sat for many years so I figure that there could many things wrong.

Thanks, Dave

Ummmm if you have a mechanical fuel pump sounds like the cam lobe for the eccentric may be worn down. If you have all electric I'm wondering if the pickup is on the bottom of the tank and all connections are tight, not pulling air? Otherwise might be a vent problem. Good luck.

Does it do this all the time? When the motor is cold as well as hot or only when it is hot?

Re: Fuel Problems

It happens mostly when it is hot, and it also will occasionaly have bubbles when pumping into the filter.

I had a problem somewhat like yours a while back. I couldn't figure out why I couldn't matain freeway speeds without running out of gas. Very frustrating!

What I found out is that one of the rubber gas lines from one of the tanks to the hard lines had a pin hole in it. The line wasn't that old and appeared to be in good condition. Under careful scrutiny I finally found the problem, a telltale sign of a gas stain on the rubber. Bending the hose caused the hole to appear and confirmed my suspicions. Not too big to cause a leak but big enough to suck air when the pump pulled hard enough. The fact you have bubbles going through your filter indacates this may be your problem. Just need to find out where it's sucking air.

Check your fuel lines good. Check all hose clamps and make sure they're snug. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Like DailyDriver said check all your fuel lines. I would also look at the hard lines for rust or wear holes. You may even have a hole in the pick up tube inside the tank. My bet is a hole in the line or a loose clamp. Hole before the fuel punp = air in the line, after the pump = gas leak. (at least this has been my experiance)
