Header help 2000 5.4l

Wanting to go with long tubes but everything states “will not fit” the ex. Anyone put long tubes on an ex if so which ones? and was there any modifications needed if you went with f250 long tubes? Thanks in advance

I'm running Bank's headers on my 6.8L. They fit great, I bought the whole power pack. I'd see if they make a system for your 5.4

From what I can see no banks does not have 5.4l headers listed, not on their mobile site anyway. In fact the only engine you can select under “ex” is the v10! So I looked under f250 5.4 was listed but no results for headers or “power pack” kit. They did have a filter or two lmao.

Probably a wasted read but a little back story: I bought this 2000 model ex from Evansville expressway dodge at auction about 6 years ago with the littlest damn motor available the v8. It had 170k miles on the odometer as well as a slight amount of 5.4 chatter on startup under acceleration. The chatter is still there on start up and we’re setting just under 220k. I have blew the same spark plug out multiple times (thank you pain in my *** helicoils) and absolutely ripped apart two different harmonic balancers. I still have the power it had 50k miles ago (which isn’t saying much) but I’ve developed a slight oil drip onto the y-pipe (never drips on the ground) that is also worse on start up under acceleration. I do have a large puddle at the end of my drive that is likely the reason for the excess amount of smoke/steam as I don’t see the loss of oil on the dipstick very often maybe a quart every 3months at most, but an oil leak of any size is not your friend. This is what needs diagnosed and nipped in the butt, but if I’m going to take that much apart (it’s lower than the intake gasket) I’m doing the headers while I’m there. Hopefully the headers alone will be a noticeable change in power but if not then we will see about a lightning supercharger and everything in between. She needs “MORE POWER”(Tim Allen). This truck is the last truck I will own I may purchase others but this ones here to stay unless they bring em back. It’s probably a stupid question as it’s a f250 platform f250 headers should fit but every single listing of f250 long tube headers I’ve found say it’s not applicable to the excursion. I am in aware of any differences under to front end at all that would any type of clearance differences.

The frame on the EX is different. I don't know if that is the problem or not. We bought a set of Manzo stainless steel shorty headers for my daughter's 87 Silverado. They made a seat of the pants improvement. They have a nice thick flange and 14 gauge pipe. I would see if you can find a set of them for the 5.4. They are decent quality and reasonably priced. Use Remflex gaskets.

Did not know the frame was different. There’s a ton of shorties compared to long. I was wanting long tubes over shorts due to wanting to eventually supercharge it but due to availability and clearance concerns I will most likely go shorts. Shorts would still be an improvement from stock, just wasn’t my first choice. Then again, I thought I had the choice lol, shorties it is! After diving deeper into the other forums I see headers is a pretty dead category so again I do appreciate the help fella

The frames are different because of the passenger compartment. There is a thread on it somewhere, maybe in the tech section. Maybe you could find a truck with headers and compare your EX to see if they fit. I don't think there is much difference, maybe they'll fit.

I'm not sure how active @1975StroppeBaja is now on here but here is a link to his install of JBA header's. Also installed a SPD y-pipe but if you have the ramhorns I'd keep them.

Hey Bently_Coop! I'm definitely not as active on here as I once was. Sad because I really enjoyed spending time on here and doing writeups but I don't have near as much time for that these days.

FFSjeff -- my gut tells me that the y-pipe upgrade does more good than the headers. So, if you can't find a source for headers that you're happy with, you might just try that first and see what you think.

Otherwise, I would think the JBA shorty's would work for your Ex. I did have an issue with mine after about 5 years -- the driver's side got a leak, right where the four tubes come together. The folks at JBA worked with me a bit and gave me a pretty sizeable discount (I don't remember how much, but it was >50% off the cost) and sold me a new driver's side header.

Good luck and be sure to post back with what you end up doing!

I will definitely stick around and show off my shenanigans can’t wait till the “squatch” isn’t leaky and sounds as mean as it looks I do wish money wasn’t an issue and I could just pay the muffler shop guy to figure it out but where the hell is the fun in that?, thanks again fellas

Nice to see your post, Jason.

I still click the link to your tech page I have listed in the Excursion tech folder ever-so-often to make sure the page is still up. Always makes me smile when I see it is!

Thanks Stewart!

I try to stop by here every so often but not like I used to. I used to spend hours on here every evening. Maybe I need to buy a newer truck... hmmmm haha.

Gibsons

After much internal debate and twiddling of the thumbs I decided to go with the Gibson gp126s-1, just under $400 before tax I did not however see that it was a three month shipping time as I guess they are made to order? Oh well we will see in August! Any recommendations for the *** end of the exhaust? True duals? Old ram horns into new x pipe and back? Money is a limitation but it’s not nonexistent I’m just a penny pinching cheap *** I also mentioned a SC earlier, and this would still be ideal but I was reading the older threads and it seems the 4x4 was an issue with a lightning SC has anyone figured out how to make it work or should I just trash the idea?

Aeroturbine or Jones Muffler, no need to replace the piping unless rotted out.

Spend the money on a Tuner from 5star or some maintenance.

I'm with Coop on the muffler and piping and tunes recommendation. . To me the 3030XL with the resonator sounds better than the plain 3030 without. But the 5.4 has a different factory exhaust setup from the V-10s so not sure how the 3030XL would fit. Is there a separate muffler and resonator on the 5.4 exhaust? And does it have the Rams Horn Y pipe? Do the Gibson headers come with a new Y pipe? Does this 5.4 have an EGR?
