New/Different Powertrain

A question for owners of the current generation F150.

When it’s time to purchase another or a new F150, how many of you would try/switch to a different powertrain.

I‘m a V8 man and I love the Coyote in my 2016 Lariat but on my next F150, I think I’d like to try the 3.5 EB or whatever the 3.5 EB will evolve into. I know I’m not interested in a hybrid or total electric F150 because I’d want the bugs to be worked out of those two combinations before I’d even consider either of them.

Also, I don’t don’t care about payload or towing ratings because I won’t be doing much of either of them so I hope the rumored IRS will come to the F150 as an option.

Looking forward to reading other members thoughts.

Have a great weekend.

I like my '18 V8. The NA V8 makes power in a traditional form and can be easily serviced. I have had a boosted vehicle in the past and didn't want the problems associated with them as they age. Ripped/leaky boost hoses, leaky inter-cooler, oil pipes to turbo bearings, leaky down-pipes, shutter doors, turbo farts, blow-by, oil dilution, removing all the plumbing to work on it, whatever. I am happy even if it has less lower range power. The V8 makes enough power to scare you and the 10 speed more than makes up for it.
I guess I will get flamed for this response. =]

I'm very happy with my coyote 6-speed that I bought in '15, especially after reading some of the posts here about problems with the newer 5,0 and 10-speeds. I might be tempted to go the turbo route if I didn't have to pay extra for it. Like GABAR I don't tow much and only occasionally carry a heavy load in the bed, so the V-8 has more than enough power for my needs.

I’m very pleased with my 2.7 EB. I’ll buy it again if it’s still offered when the time comes for a new one.

I’ve always been a V8 guy. I’ve always bought the biggest engine available in the vehicles I’ve owned. I like having power on tap for whatever I need to do.

So, it was a tough decision for me when I picked my current truck. I decided to try the 3.5EB, even though it’s a smaller engine. Frankly, I’m very impressed. The power output is right where you want it for daily driving, the low RPM torque let’s you accelerate effortlessly without needing to wind up the engine.

I’ve driven V8’s since having my EB, but now they feel anemic in everyday driving. That doesn’t mean they are lacking in power, it’s just very noticeable that they don’t make as much torque in the RPM range of daily driving.

Having said that, you’d probably be happy with whatever you choose....I was just surprised by how different they feel in daily driving.

I'm inclined to agree with KingofWilieTx. Get whichever engine feels right for you. The V8 sounds great; both of the EcoBoost engines perform well beyond their displacement (and the V8); and the NA 3.3L does great and is economical to boot. I will reserve opinion on the 3L diesel, as it's kind of on the expensive side for what you get.

We love our 3.5L EcoBoost. Outstanding power, and very quiet, No complaints whatsoever. When it gets 10 or 12 years old, we will probably get a 10-speed version and continue down that happy road.

My needs are the same as the OP. Going back to a V8 has been on my mind for a little while, although my tuned 3.5 does a VERY good job of movin out. I think I'd like to add a supercharger, plus, I'll admit it, even with a Borla on, my 3.5 just doesn't right.
As far as olde guy practicality, I'd almost have to flip a quarter when it came time to select an engine, I've had both, and they're both good engines.
I'm holding off for at least a year, until I find out what the next gen Ranger is like, crap, this might be my last 150.
My wants aren't the same as my needs, if I bought for my needs, I'd be in a stripped down Escape.

I've owned a 7.3L powerstroke, a 5.4L 3V, a 3.5L Eco and a 2.7L Eco.

Assuming we never go back you a pre+emissions diesel world, I'd probably stick with the EcoBoost line up.

I realize the 5.4 was not known for it's reliability, and they're all from different eras, but I've been most happy with my Ecoboost offerings.

My last 2, 2012 and 2015 were both 3.5 Eco's, I did love the power. Howver when I orded this new 2018 I went with the 5.0 mainly because it wil do what I need. Which is pull a bass boat, athough I fish for Crappie mainly. It is almost as fast as the Eco but it doesn't have the low end shove the Eco's had, and it was a cheaper option. I ran 2 with the 5.4, 05 and 07, I never had a problenm with them or the Eco's I did miss the V-8 sound. I didn't get order the 1,200 Moon roof either. Never really used it, only had one problem with it which was repaired under warranty. I am happy with my decision and this will most likely be my last new truck, due to health reasons and age.

My next truck if there is one will likely be just as I'm about to retire or just after. Retirement from the USPS greatly changes my truck needs which will allow me to drop to a 4x2 and in doing so, I'd likely opt for the 3.3L V-6. My next truck will not be my primary vehicle, it'll just be a truck.

If Ford puts the new 4.8L V8 which has port and DI I would consider it as I believe it would get better fuel economy towing than my 3.5 ecoboost. Having said that I am not willing to give up my current level of HP and torque to get it

Those articles are 3 years old. I doubt there will be a 4.8. More than likely the new 5.0 is what that rumored was. It was a huge investment to design and manufacture an all new 5.0, so I doubt it’ll be dropped this soon.

It does need to be fixed though, as it it proving early in it’s life cycle to be an unreliable truck engine. Ford can’t have an engine in the lineup that is undesirable. It will kill sales of roughly 25% of F150s (almost 250,000 yearly). Can’t do away with a V8 for the same reason.

I would suggest that Ford design a destroked, small bore, lower deck height version of the gas 7.3 engine, somewhere around 5.5 liters and use that in future F150s.

Or redesign the current 5.0 to have a CGI block. Although, In reality that would be yet another all new engine.

I've always been a V-8 fan, due to the power, torque and sound. I bought the 3.5 Eco in my 15 F150 Screw. Couldn't be happier.

Don't plan on buying another truck for a long time but if I had to replace this one, I'd get another 5.0 V8 engine, no issues from the 10 spd, would probably opt for 3.73's over the present 3.55's but overall no complaints on the truck we have.

It'll be a V8 again for me, although I'll admit I'll check out a 3.5EB. Absolutely love my 2016 5.0, 20+ mpg, tows like a tank, sounds amazing and super reliable for 70k+ miles.

In all honestly I am looking at the 2020 Superduty with the new 7.3. But not to replace to the 16 5.0, but as a weekend tow vehicle. Which means keeping the 2016 F150 for a really long time.
