What Would You Do?

I have had my 2007 V10 F250 since Nov. 2006. It has been a great truck. I rarely use it's capabilities as my boat is only 5k lbs, camper is less than that and utility trailer is a single axle.

I am getting the itch to get a new F150. I'm sitting on the fence between the 5.0 and 3.5. I try and tell myself that getting better MPG would be a good thing but I only have 62K on my truck so I'm not spending a fortune on gas either. It would be nice to upgrade to the heated / cooled seats, back up camera, etc.....

My fear is I get rid of a perfectly good truck to take a chance on another. My F250 has been 100% trouble free...other than the 10-11 MPG...I have no rust and have taken good care of it. Anyone ever have the fear of replacing something that isn't broke?

I think the best way is to compare side by side the pros and cons. Is this a want or need? What's the value of your truck at now? Are you driving your truck daily?

I think the engines you mentioned can pull the same as yours is rated for. Obviously wouldn't have an issue with what your towing in an F150.

You'll make somebody a happy camper when they buy your old clunker.

As stated above, it's more of a "want" rather than a need. If you figure the amount you will pay for a new F-150 and the difference in what you will get for your V-10, that amount can buy one hell of alot of gasoline.

If you do go through with getting the F-150, I would recommend the 5.0 over the turbo if you plan on keeping it long term. I have friends with the new turbo and some have had mucho problems. Truck Trend did an unofficial test a couple years ago where they gave 2 rodeo team roping teams one 5.0 and one V-6 Turbo to see what the real word mileage would be. Of course, it depends on driving situations, but the 5.0 beat the V-6 by a bunch like 16 for the turbo and 24 for the 5.0, and that was pulling a horse trailer with 2 horses each.

Appreciate the feedback. It's definitely a want instead of a need. I have kept my last 3 trucks an average of around 9 years. Sometimes you just get the itch for something new.

I was thinking that the new aluminum truck would be a long term keeper and we are thinking alike that the 5.0 has a better chance of lasting 15 years or more.

I know the internet magnifies all the issues but it seems like getting anything new these days you are taking a chance. I have always had good luck and don't want that to change.

If you end up getting the new one, can I have first crack at your 07?

Would you have payments if you took on the F150? If so would the payments essentially eliminate any fuel savings you hope to gain? Know what I'm saying? Would your insurance rise with a new truck, thus reducing mpg gains? I know I'm basing this on mpg but you did talk about it. You keep trucks a while so it's a good low mileage unit. I guess ask yourself "What is the downside of owning this truck X more years?"

If you want the F150 then an upside is it is a new truck with all the new gadgetry.

You make good points. I would probably write a check for the difference and that is part of the urgency. My truck now has decent value but is going down every year.

There is no financial advantage to getting the newer truck for sure. It's just a new truck with all the gadgetry like you say. I just fear that I give up something completely reliable to get something that has issues. Scares me.

Do you have a buyer/trade with a valid offer?

I had my truck sold to a Ford dealer last year for $23k outright (no trade or purchase on my part) but they backed out on it. I'm glad I still have it but would walk away from my truck if I could get that again. I see trucks similar to mine, as in year and mileage, listing for $26-$28k. I think I may list mine again for that price range and see what happens. Anyone that wants to bite at that price range I'd sell to without a thought I think.

I really wouldn't mind a used work purposed truck (flatbed, dump, utility body, or combo of each). But just like you I have a hard time parting with a known good truck. My only issue with mine is that it has those breakable garbage 2 piece plugs.

Who knows.

What do you want more I guess?

The other thing is a new truck comes with a warranty and options to extended that warranty, although for a cost. But then it's peace of mind for 5 years I guess.

If I had the money and was able I may buy a new one. I think many years from now, if we're not in flying cars, I'll be trading up before warranty expires to give piece of mind. I don't mind working on stuff now but later I'm not sure I want to spend free time or weekends fixing things on cars & trucks.

If I was to get an F150 it would be the eco boost or the 6.2.

What I've done the last 2 trucks is make the best deal on trade in and order a new one. The small town dealer is very fair on trade in as we buy lots of vehicles from him.

During the 8 weeks of build time I try and sell the truck, for more than trade in, and have been successful both times. For a 100 dollar fee the dealer lets me run the transaction thru them and still count the value of my truck as trade in. This saves quite a bit in sales tax.

I've struggled with this issue myself. I've got a 2k v10 supercab super duty 4x4 with 79k on the odo. I've had it for 2 years. It was in rough shape when I bought it (73k at the time) but it ran beautifully & smogged amazingly clean... and I only paid $4200 for it. It needs SOOO much work to get it up to my standards. Has a cracked valve cover, a vacuum leak, cracked airbox, front end needs rebuilt, lock cylinders, window switch, seat covers, yada yada yada. For what I paid for it, I can definitely afford to put some money into it, but the time required to get all the work done is daunting. I've got a new puppy... who's gonna grow into a BIG DOG (130-150 lbs, typically) and the extra room of a crew cab would be nice. I love the v10, but a clean, low mileage '05-'10 V10 4x4 crew cab is next to impossible to find & if I go newer, the sticker soars north of $30k. I don't NEED a new truck, but finding time to work on my existing truck has been nearly impossible when trying to keep track of a puppy... so I understand your dilemma.

1. My opinion, never buy a brand new anything off the lot. Get a 1 year old trade-in that still has 3-4 years of warranty, and don't flush 6 grand or more down the toilet.

2. If you don't have a 5 Star tuner yet, DO NOT sell your truck until you try one. It will change your life.
