Mini Tutorial: Vent Window Chrome + Gaskets

Hey everyone,

After lurking the forums as well as asking a few questions a while back regarding getting the vent windows plated and inserting new gaskets, I thought I'd take a crack at getting mine done. I took some pictures along the way in case someone is contemplating doing theirs. Hope you enjoy!

I started out with a pair of assemblies out of a '70. Still wanted to be able to drive mine while in the process of re-doing these.

After removing the vent glass from the channel frame, I had to dremel a few rivets out that held the vent gasket in and remove the top screw to full remove the gasket.

I had originally planned on reusing the glass, but after lots of soaking and tugging it was pretty clear it wasn't coming out. I chose for the more, er...efficient method. way more fun. Plus the glass is relatively cheap.

Almost ready for plating. After this photo, I forgot to take a shot of the loop part of the "P" on the channel disassembled. That part is not exposed (covered by the gasket) and does not need to be plated.

I then went the route of getting some vent glass for LMC and the tape from DC. I used the 1 1/6" tape and set the glass into the newly chromed frame (not pictured). This is a great reference

Here's the vent re-plated, re-riveted (took 5/32" rivets - tough to find!), and re-assembled along with some new hardware, misc. from LMC. I used this video as an installation reference
. Despite what I found the debate to be on the forum, I did not have to re-rivet my vent gasket and did not use any silicone. They lock in pretty darn well on their own. Everything re-installed relatively easy with the exception of the part where the threads down into the channel (see where the blue spring currently is). The plating company chromed this extrusion which made fitting difficult. Nothing a bench grinder couldn't fix!

Before...

And finally After!
