Oil pressure switch
My 2017 f350 with 16k miles on it had an issue I am hoping someone can advise me on. While in park the rpms would go up. I could tap the gas and it would drop to normal for about a minute and then return to raised rpm. All gages are reading normal. A few minutes later grey smoke starts pouring out of the tail pipe. I get out to check the truck. The smoke smells like burnt engine oil. I got back in and my oil pressure gage is in the red and check engine lite it on. I shut it down and had it towed in to ford. They can’t recreate any of this and say no code was thrown. It was recommended to change the known to be faulty oil pressure switch? Truck seems to be fine now but I can’t get any answers from Ford as to why my truck would smoke like something was on fire with those gage reading and the engine is fine? Anyone have the same experience? Thanks!

Welcome to the forum. Do you have an early build 2017? There were a few trucks that had what I believed was an oil pump issue and many were held on dealers lots until they could test the trucks in question. If they were found defective repairs were made before they were released. As far as the smoke, depending on weather conditions, sometimes they will emit whitish smoke during a regen. Not sure if this is the case with yours though. Never experienced the symptoms that you are describing.

Sure doesn't sound like a faulty oil pressure switch could cause the smoke you described. The ECU/engine is simply incapable of reacting to a (false) low oil pressure situation and producing smoke. I would ask the dealer more questions along the line of, "well, OK, let's say the switch is bad.... how does that make the truck smoke...."

My truck was a late build. I ordered it the last day you could order a 17..... delivery was Early December. They said the switch is known to be faulty and that is why they changed it to the new and improved one. They could not recreate the smoke or oil pressure gage issue. Honestly I think they cranked it and then turned it off.... I agree smoke like this would not come from a switch that doesn’t even through a code . They tried to say it was steam. Definitely not steam. Thanks for y’alls input. I think I will ask around somemore at anther dealership or mom and pop shop.

Could the truck have been going through a regen. at the same time the oil pressure switch started acting up?

I have never had smoke from that and it is a different, distinct smell. This was a burnt oil smell and true smoke . The rpms did climb prior to this happening for several minutes. During the smoke the oil pressure gage bottomed out and check engine light came on. Thoughts?

It appears that your truck is still under warranty and a dealer should handle and hopefully resolve the issue quickly. You can try sending a message to Bill Hewitt at Powerstrokehelp.com and see if he can at least steer you in the right direction. I've never dealt with him personally but heard some good things about him on the internet. Maybe there are some techs here on the site that haven't gotten to your post yet.

It sounds like you were on the threshold of having a runaway diesel. If you had very high oil pressure, it might have blown past the seal on the turbo. That would explain the high idle and smoke out the exhaust. I don't know why your oil pressure would have been so high other than a failure in the oil pump pressure bypass.
