Steering wheels

Hello, all. While I do love my bullnose, I do carry the sentiments of my other cars onto it.. and one of the things I have never liked is the 15" or so stock steering wheel. To me it's just too small. My truck is of course a D-spline shaft year, so I can't just stick anything on it. ..Without modification I suppose. Honestly what I would like is a 16-17" wheel with a horn ring, like a 70's model might have. I've also seen the 80's F-700 type wheels, and those would be a neat alternative.
I know most people these days go with a small wheel, if anything. My power steering works just fine and there's nothing wrong with the stock wheel at all .. I just find it too small. Heck my '66 Volvo has an 18" wheel.
Has anyone ever done such a modification? I have seen some older posts here of bull wheels fitted to 70s models, but not the other way around.

There are other things to consider besides the splines. The horn brush has to line up with the copper pickup ring, and the tang on the wheel has to properly engage the turnsignal cam to cancel it when you turn the wheel.

Hmm, yes. Hadn't through of the horn brush. Self cancel doesn't bother me much though, as most of my other cars dont have the feature.

the bigger the wheel the smaller or thinner you better be! it's usually the opposite with big guys wanting to put on smaller diameter wheels for body space.

This steering wheel thread has me thinking that I'd like to switch my original 15" steering wheel for a newer 151/2" thicker steering wheel. I got the one in the picture at a JY a few years ago but I can't remember what year it came from (1985 F 150?). The number inside is D5AW-3D752. A large "X" and a "2" are also near that number. The flat ring in the centre of the metal spokes says BCF. Will this wheel fit my 1980 F 100?

Only one way to know.
Remove your wheel see if the horn rings on the under side are in the same place on both from the center of the wheels.
Then give it a try and see if it fits.

Non-Ford: I was able to take a mid 80's Jeep sports wheel, thick like yours, and use it on my 70 AMC Javelin.
I even swapped out the Jeep center for the Javelin bullseye. I never gave it a thought it would not fit.

It should work just fine (but Bill says no, see below).

D5AW is 1975 LTD, the same wheel was used thru 1978. It will not work on your truck.

1980/82 & 1983 F100/350, Bronco & Econoline before production date 8/83 used the same 2 spoke steering wheel.

That's weird because I know I didn't take that wheel from a 1970's truck; there weren't any in the 2 JY's I frequented. It looks like my existing wheel but thicker. Going to take the wheel off after I get an alignment and check it out.
