When I installed my EZ wiring harness in my 48 I installed a 7 wire after market turn signal unit readily available on ebay on my original steering column . It has been working for a number of years without any issues. I recently installed power steering on the truck and added a new CPP steering column. The steering column has GM wiring so I followed the directions that came with the steering column related to the plug. Everything works except for the brake lights. I checked the brake switch where I expected to see 12 volts on one side. Nothing. I have white and orange wires that say brake switch connected to the brake switch. I traced the white wire back to the GM plug on the column. The orange wire goes into the back of the fuse box so I'm stuck unless I pull the box. I'm hoping someone on the forum has an easier answer. The ez wire harness manual doesn't exactly come with the schematics I would prefer.
Additional information: I ran a hot wire from the battery down to the brake switch replacing the orange wire. When I switch on a turn signal the brake light on that side goes out and the turn signal comes on because it's using the same filament (I checked visually). Oddly to me the other side brake light stays on. Is this the new normal? I have taillight bulbs with two filaments and I'm pretty sure they worked independently. That it to say the brake light would stay on even when the turn signal was engaged. Any help from you guys would be appreciated.
If you step on the brake pedal, and the brake lights come on, that is normal. If your brake lights are on and you turn on your left turn signal, the right brake light remains on and the left brake lamp will flash, indicating a turn. That's how it's supposed to work. It's the tail lamps that work off the other filament in the bulb.
Thanks for the fast reply. I guess your right as I checked the way my F-150 works and it is the same. Not sure why I thought it used two filaments. I still don't know why I'm not getting 12 volts on the orange brake wire but it's no big deal I can snip it and run it to a hot. Thanks for the help!
